The activities included <A href=\"http:\/\/www.100hoursofastronomy.org\/\">&#8220;100 Hours of Astronomy&#8221;<\/A> in April, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.galileannights.org\/\">Galilean Nights<\/A> in October &#8230; and&nbsp;the distribution of more than 110,000 <A href=\"http:\/\/cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com\/archive\/2009\/07\/22\/2004797.aspx\">low-cost, high-performance telescopes<\/A> in 96 countries.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Another 70,000 <A href=\"https:\/\/www.galileoscope.org\/\">&#8220;Galileoscopes&#8221;<\/A> are currently in production, and more than 15,000 of them will be given out to schoolteachers across the United States thanks to a $250,000 private donation <A href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceref.com\/news\/viewpr.html?pid=29979\">announced just this week<\/A>.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>All this would be enough to justify devoting a year to the celebration of astronomy, and then quietly taking a break and&nbsp;moving on to the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.cbd.int\/2010\/welcome\/\">next &#8220;international year.&#8221;<\/A> But wait &#8230; there&#8217;s more: Several Web sites have been established to keep the astronomy buzz going into 2010 and beyond.<\/P>&#8230;(<a href=\"http:\/\/cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com\/archive\/2010\/01\/08\/2168962.aspx\">read more<\/a>)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com\/aggbug.aspx?PostID=2168962\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Library of Congress &nbsp; Galileo Galilei shows off his telescope as well as his astronomical discoveries to three women in a 1655 engraving.
