Thousands of officials have fled China over the past 30
\nyears with some 50 billion dollars in public funds, state media said
\nMonday, as the government<\/a> scrambles to stem the tide of corruption.<\/p>\n

As many as 4,000 officials have disappeared, using
\ncriminal gangs, mainly in the United States and Australia, to launder
\ntheir ill-gotten gains, buy real estate and set up false identities,
\nthe Global Times said.<\/p>\n

A joint task force involving 15 Chinese ministries has been set up to choke off graft in government<\/a> ranks, the paper said.<\/p>\n

In 2009, authorities investigated 103 cases involving the outbound
\ntravel of more than 300 officials, the paper said, citing a party
\nofficial tasked with disciplinary issues.<\/p>\n
