Conservative MP Maurice Vellacott issued a release this week to say
\nhe had been vindicated by the National Cancer<\/a> Institute for making the
\ncontroversial claim that there is a link between induced abortion and
\nbreast cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And Mr. Vellacott may be right.<\/p>\n

Three years ago, the Saskatchewan MP helped to bring an American
\ndoctor and activist to Parliament Hill to tell Canadian women that
\nabortion increases the risk of breast cancer<\/a>. It turned out that the
\ndoctor, Angela Lanfranchi, was speaking from a defined religious point
\nof view that had little apparent basis in science.<\/p>\n

And, at the time, the link between the procedure and the disease had
\nbeen discounted by the National Cancer<\/a> Institute in the United States,
\nthe Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada<\/a> (and their
\nU.S. counterparts), as well as the Canadian Cancer<\/a> Society and the
\nCanadian Breast Cancer<\/a> Network.<\/p>\n

But a study released last fall (available here but only for a fee<\/a>)
\nby the respected Fred Hutchinson Cancer<\/a> Research Institute in Seattle
\nby a number of distinguished cancer<\/a> experts including Louise Brinton,
\nthe chief of the Hormonal and Reproductive Epidemiology Branch of the
\nNational Cancer<\/a> Institute lists induced abortion as being
\n\u201cassociated with an increased risk for breast cancer<\/a>.\u201d
\nBackground documents further suggest that it increases the risk of the
\ndisease by 40 per cent.<\/p>\n
