The US<\/a> does not want to see confrontation with Iran<\/a> but
\nis still preparing its military for that possibility, America\u2019s
\ntop uniformed officer said Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve looked to do all we can to ensure
\nthat conflict doesn\u2019t break out there, while at the same time
\npreparing forces, as we do for many contingencies that we understand
\nmight occur,\u201d Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
\nStaff, said during an appearance at the Washington Institute for Near
\nEast Policy.<\/p>\n

Mullen had been asked whether the US<\/a> military was stretched too thin
\nto take further action in trouble spots beyond Iraq<\/a> and Afghanistan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very hard-pressed right now\u201d because of the
\ntwo wars, he noted, but added that it is primarily ground troops that
\nhave been deployed, and \u201cthe likelihood that our ground forces
\nwould have to go somewhere in these kinds of numbers in some other part
\nof the world, or even in the same region, I think is pretty low.\u201d<\/p>\n
