Texas Congressman Dr. Ron Paul wants to see if the valuations of the Federal Reserve\u2019s transactions were fair.<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve Forbes: What precisely will your bill on auditing the Fed do and not do? Let\u2019s just clear that up.<\/p>\n

Paul: As a matter of fact, it\u2019s a pretty weak bill when you think about it.<\/p>\n

Forbes: It seems pretty mild.<\/p>\n

Paul: But from their viewpoint it is horrendous because we know what
\nthey\u2019ve been doing. You know? And they don\u2019t want us<\/a> to
\nknow what they\u2019ve been doing. The big argument has always been
\nthey don\u2019t want transparency because they\u2019ll lose their
\nindependence. And independence means secrecy. If they lose their
\nsecrecy then the people and the Congress won\u2019t know what
\nthey\u2019ve been doing. Who gets bailed out at what price? \u2026 I
\nput an explicit statement in there that we have no intention of
\nmonitoring monetary policy even though I have different views. But, you
\nknow, when you think of it, Bernie Sanders was a cosponsor in the
\nSenate. He and I don\u2019t see eye to eye on the market. But we see
\neye to eye on transparency. So we wouldn\u2019t agree on monetary
\npolicy, but we agreed on this bill. But in order to clarify that
\nBernanke would say, \u201cWell what we don\u2019t need is Congress
\ncoming in the day after we have a FOMC meeting and finding out who said
\nwhat and why because everybody would be hesitant.\u201d And one of the
\narguments is, \u201cIf Congress had anything to do with this,
\nthey\u2019d keep interest rates too low too long.\u201d<\/p>\n
