A senior Yemeni official has warned that any military intervention
\nby the United States in the country to fight al-Qaeda will not go as
\nplanned and to the contrary would make the terrorist network stronger.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny intervention or direct [military] action by the United
\nStates could strengthen the al-Qaeda network and not weaken it,\u201d
\nRashed Al-Alimi, the deputy prime minister for defense and security
\naffairs, said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur position is clear; we will fight and chase the al-Qaeda
\ngroup depending on Yemeni forces and security agencies,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The comments came amid reports that Washington is reviewing targets
\nfor possible strike on Yemeni soil in retaliation for a failed
\nChristmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound airliner.<\/p>\n

Two senior US<\/a> officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said in late December<\/a>
\nthat the preparation is aimed at being ready with options for the White
\nHouse, should US<\/a> President Barack Obama<\/a> order a retaliatory strike.
\nThey added that the effort is to see whether the targets can be
\nspecifically linked to the planning for the airliner incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cUS<\/a> special operations forces and intelligence agencies, and
\ntheir Yemeni counterparts, are working to identify potential al-Qaeda
\ntargets in Yemen,\u201d one of the officials said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
