China\u2019s top official in Hong Kong made a rare
\nappeal for pro-democracy protests to remain peaceful as a politician
\nclose to the central government<\/a> warned it will send in troops if the
\ndemonstrations get out of hand, a report said Thursday.<\/p>\n

The remarks were made after thousands of people took to
\nthe streets on New Year\u2019s Day to call for universal suffrage and
\nfor the release of jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.<\/p>\n

The march was largely peaceful until scuffles broke out as around
\n100 activists were confronted by scores of police outside the Central
\nGovernment<\/a> Liaison Office, the body responsible for the city\u2019s
\nties with Beijing.<\/p>\n

The group chanted slogans, banged drums, and tried to break through a police barricade.<\/p>\n
