Rotterdam police are trying to develop a portable scanner which will
\nallow them to see through people\u2019s clothing and look for
\nconcealed weapons, the NRC<\/a> reports on Friday.<\/p>\n

The force has been given a \u20ac500,000 government<\/a> grant to develop
\nthe mobile weapons detector, which would use similar technology to the
\nscanners being introduced at Amsterdam\u2019s Schiphol airport, the
\npaper says.<\/p>\n

The aim is to develop a prototype ready for production within three years.<\/p>\n

The paper bases its claim on a confidential document which suggests
\nthe scanner could first be used as an alternative to random body
\nsearches in high risk areas. The mobile detector would enable the
\nsearch to be carried out more quickly and would only be used on people
\nsuspected of carrying concealed weapons, police spokesman Paul De
\nKruijf told the paper.<\/p>\n

The document also mentions the possibility of carrying out
\nlong-distance scans and mass scans on crowds at events such as football
\nmatches. In addition, the scan could be combined with a sniffer
\ndetector which would analyse an \u2018air sample\u2019 from a suspect
\nfor traces of drugs<\/a> or explosives, the paper says.<\/p>\n
