The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has
\nwarned against regulators over reacting in the wake of the recent
\nterrorist attempt on a Delta Air Lines passenger aircraft bound for the
\nUSA.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes real political maturity to remain calm and not fall
\ninto the trap of knee jerk reactions such as imposition of new security
\nmeasures,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditional security measures are only justified when it can
\nbe demonstrated that the benefits outweigh the additional burdens they
\nimpose on society.\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n

Following the 26 December attempted bombing of a Delta Air Lines
\nflight from Amsterdam Schiphol to Detroit, the Dutch airport announced
\nit would be introducing full body scanners<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the AAPA says \u201cthere is insufficient evidence regarding
\nthe effectiveness\u201d of full body scanners<\/a>, \u201cto justify their
\nimmediate deployment\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than focus on ever more intrusive passenger screening,
\nthe key lesson from this, and previous terrorist incidents, is the
\ncritical importance of effective intelligence gathering and
\nanalysis,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n
