At every event I have been to \u2013 if I have been lucky enough to ask a question \u2013 they have pretty much been: &#8216;<strong>how<\/strong> is DECC going to <strong>engage more with young people<\/strong>, and let them be involved in decision-making; Or &#8211; will <strong>DECC include<\/strong> a young person in the official <strong>UK Delegation<\/strong>; Or- would DECC consider having a <strong>youth advisor\/panel <\/strong>who can present youth perspectives to the Department.&#8217;  At most of the events <strong>Ed Miliband<\/strong>, has agreed to these ideas, but only <strong>informally. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span id=\"more-1450\"><\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So I was really excited when someone from the<strong> Department <\/strong>called to tell me that after all the great questions we have been asking at events like the <strong>Miliband LSE lecture, The Wave, and Youth Question Time<\/strong> (thanks to all of you for asking those questions too!) there is going to be a consultation on how to involve young people in the<strong> DECC decision making process!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So&#8230; Ta-daaaa:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s.aspx?sm=xG5zkLxchLkDydYPc\/RZpIZk77wNuRU6km1ot%2biNZ6U%3d\">http:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s.aspx?sm=xG5zkLxchLkDydYPc\/RZpIZk77wNuRU6km1ot%2biNZ6U%3d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you are a <strong>young person<\/strong> who <strong>cares about being involved in the decisions<\/strong> that affect <strong>your future<\/strong>, then please do take 4 minutes of your time to fill out the survey.  Please also do<strong> publicise<\/strong> it through your other networks and put it up on your websites so that we can have <strong>hundreds and thousands of young people<\/strong> replying to this! \u00a0If you are involved with UKYCC, please also remember to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">affiliate yourself with UKYCC <\/span>on the survey so we can show how many young people in UKYCC are engaged and care about this issue!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, here are<strong> some thoughts <\/strong>on the main points \u2013 this isn&#8217;t the definitive answer, but just some ideas to help you think about what a &#8216;youth panel&#8217; (or something similar) would look like in practice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meeting as frequently as is useful with DECC<\/strong> in a range of forums; <strong>big conventions<\/strong>, as well as <strong>smaller meetings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Big conventions should give young people a chance to\u00a0<strong>present heir\u00a0opinions, ideas and proposals to DECC<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong online resources<\/strong> for all young people to utilise easily; especially those people who are in regions far out from London (like Northern Ireland and Scotland!) and for the outcomes of these surveys to be fed into DECC policy &#8211; such as a really swish DECC+Youth website and regular surveys to gather perspectives of Youth<\/li>\n<li>having a\u00a0<strong>review <\/strong>of the &#8216;youth panel&#8217;\u00a0 in <strong>6 months &#8211; one year<\/strong>; to ensure that it is fulfilling it objective of including young people in the decision-making processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In <strong>addition <\/strong>to these points, it might be nice to <strong>mention<\/strong> the following thoughts in the <strong>&#8216;any other comments&#8217; <\/strong>box:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A young person<\/strong> on the <strong>official UK delegation<\/strong> to UNFCCC negotiations, <strong>especially Bonn<\/strong> in June and future COPs<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>committee\/Ministry<\/strong> that will concentrate its research and work on <strong>very long term<\/strong> strategies; such as by thinking ahead to 2050 and 2100 and &#8216;looking back&#8217; to the see what policies needed to be in place in order to make it to the cleaner, brighter, low carbon world of the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are just some thoughts, and I&#8217;m sure you all have your own&#8230; <strong>So what are you waiting for?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s All Hands on DECC to show <strong>your<\/strong> leaders what you want <strong>YOUR<\/strong> future to look like!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to Lewis Merdler, artistic genius, for this image!
