Previously, users could turn on HTTPS connections as default in their settings, but the situation has now been reversed.<\/p>\n<p>Google said that after taking <a href=\"http:\/\/googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/https-security-for-web-applications.html\">a look at the trade-off between speed and security<\/a>, the primary concern in this case, they decided that it was worth it to the end-user to automatically use a secure connection. <\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><em>Sponsor<\/em><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/d.ads.readwriteweb.com\/ck.php?n=a6d5ead9&amp;cb=17742\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stoth.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/60dc7_avw.php?zoneid=14&amp;cb=17742&amp;n=a6d5ead9\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A group of 37 security and privacy specialists sent Google <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/images_blogs\/threatlevel\/2009\/06\/google-letter-final2.pdf\">a letter<\/a> (.pdf) last June, urging the company to offer this feature. Gmail became the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/08\/14\/gmail-nudges-past-aol-email-in-the-us-to-take-no-3-spot\/\">third largest email provider<\/a> last August, with more than 37 million unique visitors. <\/p>\n<p>For all of you sitting at a coffee shop all day, using its unsecured wireless network, Google may have just saved you some serious headaches. That extra couple of seconds of load-time may just be worth it.
