And according to a new <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/327\/5963\/338\">study<\/a> in <em>Science<\/em>, that means this breathing technique goes way, way back, and could even explain how the ancestors of <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/80beats\/tag\/dinosaurs\/\">dinosaurs<\/a> survived the great Permian-Triassic extinction.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\">Unlike a mammal\u2019s breath, which exits the lungs from the same dead-end chambers it enters, a bird\u2019s breath takes a loopy one-way street through its lungs [<a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/54464\/title\/Alligators_breathe_like_birds\"><em>Science News<\/em><\/a>]<\/span>. This breathing technique allows birds to explore high altitudes where oxygen levels drop off significantly.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-9064\"><\/span>If the archosaurs\u2014ancestors to birds and alligators\u2014breathed this way, it could have given them an advantage when oxygen level tanked 250 million years ago and lots of species died off. <span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\">Before the extinction, synapsids, the ancestors to modern mammals, were the dominant group. But after the extinction, the archosaurs dwarfed the synapsids, Farmer said. Prestosuchids, for example,\u00a0could reach 23 feet in length, while mammals\u2019 ancestors maxed out at just a few feet [<a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredscience\/2010\/01\/alligator-lungs\/\"><em>Wired.com<\/em><\/a>]<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>One burning question remains, though: How the heck did we miss this for so long? <span style=\"color:#1c39bb;\">\u201cPeople incorrectly believe that you must have avian-style air sacs in order to have unidirectional flow,\u201d says C.G. Farmer of the University of Utah, a coauthor of the new study. \u201cAlligators don\u2019t have air sacs, so no one ever looked\u201d [<a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/54464\/title\/Alligators_breathe_like_birds\">Science News<\/a>]<\/span>.
