Drummond said that the hackers never got into Gmail accounts via
\nthe Google hack, but they did manage to get some \u201caccount
\ninformation (such as the date the account was created) and subject
\nline.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s because they apparently were able to access
\na system used to help Google comply with search warrants by providing
\ndata on Google users, said a source familiar with the situation, who
\nspoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak
\nwith the press. \u201cRight before Christmas, it was, \u2018Holy
\ns***, this malware is accessing the internal intercept
\n[systems],\u2019\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

That, in turn led to a Christmas Eve meeting led by Google
\nco-founder Larry Page to assess the situation. Three weeks later, the
\ncompany had decided that things were serious enough that it would risk
\nwalking away from the largest market of Internet users in the world.<\/em><\/p>\n
