Internet companies in China must co-operate with the
\ngovernment in \u201cguiding\u201d opinion on the internet, a senior
\nChinese government spokesman has warned, as the US internet giant
\nGoogle remained in negotiations over its threat to pull out of the
\nworld\u2019s biggest internet market.<\/p>\n

The statement from China\u2019s State Council
\nInformation Office, or cabinet, confirmed China\u2019s commitment to
\ncontrolling the web following Google\u2019s ultimatum that it must be
\nallowed to operate free from censorship.<\/p>\n

Although not mentioning Google by name, Wang Chen, the cabinet
\nspokesman, said internet companies had a \u201cmajor
\nresponsibility\u201d to help the Chinese government maintain
\n\u201csocial stability and harmony\u201d by \u201cguiding public
\nopinion correctly\u201d.<\/p>\n

China justifies its draconian censorship laws on the grounds that it
\nis protecting juveniles from pornography, but its ruling Communist
\nParty also blocks access to any information that it considers might
\ndestabilise its position as the country\u2019s sole rulers.<\/p>\n
