The Obama administration\u2019s plan to protect air travelers from
\nterrorists is counting on a technology that is powerful but imperfect,
\nexperts say.<\/p>\n

The plan will place hundreds of full-body scanners in airports
\naround the country. These scanners use a technology called backscatter
\nX-ray to create images that can reveal weapons or explosives hidden
\nbeneath a person\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n

But they don\u2019t detect everything, and they won\u2019t be in every airport.<\/p>\n

Other experts, though, say backscatter scanners would probably miss a weapon or explosive concealed in a body cavity.<\/p>\n

And that apparent weakness has provided an opportunity for an
\nIndiana company called Nesch LLC, which is developing another low-dose
\nX-ray device that can find contraband where other scanners can\u2019t.<\/p>\n

This machine is called DEXI, for Diffraction Enhanced X-Ray Imaging.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo my knowledge it\u2019s the only one that very reliably
\ncan detect the presence of such substances, explosives or illegal
\nsubstances that are hidden inside of a human body,\u201d says Ivan
\nNesch, the company\u2019s president and CEO.<\/p>\n
