\nsecurity at airports following the near-disaster on Christmas Day, but
\nprivacy advocates are not prepared to accept the use of full-body
\nscanners as the routine screening system.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t need to look at naked 8-year-olds and
\ngrandmothers to secure airplanes,\u201d Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah)
\nsaid last week. \u201cI think it\u2019s a false argument to say we
\nhave to give up all of our personal privacy in order to have
\nsecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n

After each major terrorism incident, the balance between privacy and
\nsecurity tilts in favor of greater security. But in the last decade,
\nprivacy advocates have been surprisingly successful in blocking or
\nstalling government plans to search in more ways and in more places.<\/p>\n

A conservative freshman in the House, Chaffetz won a large
\nbipartisan majority last year for an amendment to oppose the
\ngovernment\u2019s use of body-image scanners as the primary screening
\nsystem for air travelers. He was joined by the American Civil Liberties
\nUnion, which said the scanners were the equivalent of a \u201cvirtual
\nstrip search.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pro-privacy stand does not follow the traditional ideological
\nlines; Republicans and Democrats have joined together on the issue now
\nand in the past.<\/p>\n

Advocates of increased security are frustrated.<\/p>\n
