Belgian prosecutors highlighted the massive losses faced by EU governments from VAT fraud<\/a>
\ntoday after they charged three Britons and a Dutchman with
\nmoney-laundering following an investigation into a multimillion-pound
\nscam involving carbon emissions<\/a> permits.<\/p>\n

The three Britons, who were arrested last month in Belgium, were
\naccused of failing to pay VAT worth \u20ac3m (\u00a32.7m) on a series
\nof carbon credit transactions.<\/p>\n

European authorities believe the EU has lost at least \u20ac5bn to carbon-trading VAT fraud<\/a>
\nin the last 18 months. Europol, the EU\u2019s law-\u00adenforcement
\noperation, fears the fraud will be used in other areas, especially gas
\nand electricity trading markets, after criminals found VAT fraud was
\none of the most lucrative financial frauds.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast month, the European police agency Europol reported that
\nthe European Union\u2019s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) had fallen
\nvictim to fraudulent trading activities over the past 18 months, worth
\n\u20ac5 billion for several national tax revenues.<\/p>\n

It estimates that in some countries, up to 90% of the whole market volume was caused by fraudulent activities.\u201d<\/p>\n
