Throughout former President George W. Bush\u2019s two terms,
\nleft-wingers often accused him of being too tied into big business,
\nwhich they claimed<\/a> had influenced policy.  Remember the outrage over Blackwater<\/a> ties to the Bush administration?<\/p>\n

However, now that a liberal is in the Oval Office, there\u2019s not
\nquite the same push for accountability when it comes to potential
\nconflicts with big business.<\/p>\n

On Jan. 6, The Washington Post reported<\/a> Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC<\/a>)
\nand the Intel Foundation were making a sizeable contribution to
\nPresident Barack Obama\u2019s philanthropic campaign for STEM
\n(science, technology, engineering and math) education that Obama
\nlaunched in November.<\/p>\n

\u201cIntel Corp., based in Santa Clara, Calif., and the Intel
\nFoundation are committing $200 million in cash and in-kind support over
\n10 years for expanded teacher training and other measures,\u201d Nick
\nAnderson wrote for the Post. \u201cFor instance, the company will
\noffer an intensive 80-hour math course to help U.S. elementary school
\nteachers, who are usually generalists, develop expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the surface, that may appear to be a good thing, until you learn
\nthat the Obama administration\u2019s Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
\nhas a pending antitrust suit against the tech giant that will test the
\nbureaucracy\u2019s powers. Anderson omitted that important detail from
\nhis Post story.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S. Federal Trade Commission\u2019s case against Intel
\nCorp. (INTC) is likely to test whether the agency can resuscitate broad
\nFTC powers that have been used rarely and viewed skeptically by the
\nfederal courts,\u201d Brent Kendall wrote for Dow Jones Newswires on Dec. 17, 2009<\/a>.
\n\u201cInstead of suing Intel in federal court for antitrust
\nviolations, the commission is bringing its case though an FTC
\nadministrative proceeding based on the Federal Trade Commission Act,
\nwhich allows broader claims than federal antitrust law. A key provision
\nof the act, known as Section 5, prohibits unfair methods of
\ncompetition, and deceptive acts and practices in commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chip manufacturer has been targeted on all fronts<\/a>
\nfor its alleged antitrust practices, by state attorneys general and
\neven by the European Union. And recently Intel agreed to pay $1.25
\nbillion to rival company Advanced Micro Devices. However, the
\nPost\u2019s neglect and\/or reluctance to tie Intel\u2019s
\nphilanthropic endeavor to the Obama administration with the
\ncompany\u2019s antitrust problems seems to be part of a larger trend
\n\u2013 one of which is the perception Obama administration gets too
\nfavorable media treatment, as polls have indicated<\/a>.<\/p>\n
