Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein, Obama\u2019s
\nappointee to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs,
\noutlined a plan for the government to infiltrate conspiracy groups in
\norder to undermine them via postings on chat rooms and social networks,
\nas well as real meetings, according to a recently uncovered article
\nSunstein wrote for the Journal of Political Philosophy.<\/p>\n

As we have often warned, chat rooms, social
\nnetworks and particularly article comment sections are routinely
\n\u201cgamed\u201d by trolls, many of whom pose as numerous different
\npeople in order to create a fake consensus, who attempt to debunk
\nwhatever information is being discussed, no matter how credible and
\nwell documented. We have seen this on our own websites for years and
\nalthough some of those individuals were acting of their own accord, a
\nsignificant number appeared to be working in shifts, routinely posting
\nthe same talking points over and over again.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a firmly established fact that the
\nmilitary-industrial complex which also owns the corporate media
\nnetworks in the United States has numerous programs aimed at
\ninfiltrating prominent Internet sites and spreading propaganda to
\ncounter the truth about the misdeeds of the government and the
\noccupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

In 2006 CENTCOM, the United States Central Command, announced<\/a>
\nthat a team of employees would be hired to engage \u201cbloggers who
\nare posting inaccurate or untrue information, as well as bloggers who
\nare posting incomplete information,\u201d about the so-called war on
\nterror. <\/span><\/p>\n

In May 2008, it was revealed that the Pentagon was expanding \u201cInformation Operations\u201d on the Internet by setting up fake foreign news websites<\/a>, designed to look like independent media sources but in reality carrying direct military propaganda.<\/p>\n

Countries like Israel have also admitted<\/a>
\nto creating an army of online trolls whose job it is to infiltrate
\nanti-war websites and act as apologists for the Zionist state\u2019s
\nwar crimes.<\/p>\n

In January last year, the US Air Force announced a \u201ccounter-blog\u201d response plan<\/a>
\naimed at fielding and reacting to material from bloggers who have
\n\u201cnegative opinions about the US government and the Air
\nForce.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plan, created by the public affairs arm of the Air
\nForce, includes a detailed twelve-point \u201ccounter blogging\u201d
\nflow-chart that dictates how officers should tackle what are described
\nas \u201ctrolls,\u201d \u201cragers,\u201d and
\n\u201cmisguided\u201d online writers.<\/p>\n

New revelations highlight the fact that the Obama administration is
\ndeliberately targeting \u201cconspiracy groups\u201d as part of a
\nCointelpro style effort to silence what have become the
\ngovernment\u2019s most vociferous and influential critics.<\/p>\n

In a 2008 article<\/a>
\npublished in the Journal of Political Philosophy, Obama information
\nczar Cass Sunstein outlined a plan for the government to stealthily
\ninfiltrate groups that pose alternative theories on historical events
\nvia \u201cchat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space
\ngroups and attempt to undermine\u201d those groups.<\/p>\n

The aim of the program would be to \u201c(break) up the hard core
\nof extremists who supply conspiracy theories,\u201d wrote Sunstein,
\nwith particular reference to 9\/11 truth organizations.<\/p>\n

Sunstein pointed out that simply having people in government refute
\nconspiracy theories wouldn\u2019t work because they are inherently
\nuntrustworthy, making it necessary to \u201cEnlist nongovernmental
\nofficials in the effort to rebut the theories. It might ensure that
\ncredible independent experts offer the rebuttal, rather than government
\nofficials themselves. There is a tradeoff between credibility and
\ncontrol, however. The price of credibility is that government cannot be
\nseen to control the independent experts,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut into English, what Sunstein is proposing is government infiltration of groups opposing prevailing policy,\u201d writes Marc Estrin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy to destroy groups with \u201ccognitive
\ndiversity.\u201d You just take up meeting time with arguments to the
\npoint where people don\u2019t come back. You make protest signs which
\nalienate 90% of colleagues. You demand revolutionary violence from
\npacifist groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is what Sunstein is advocating when he writes of the need to
\ninfiltrate conspiracy groups and sow seeds of distrust amongst members
\nin order to stifle the number of new recruits. This is classic
\n\u201cprovocateur\u201d style infiltration that came to the fore
\nduring the Cointelpro years, an FBI program from 1956-1971<\/a> that was focused around disrupting, marginalizing and neutralizing political dissidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cSunstein argued that \u201cgovernment might undertake
\n(legal) tactics for breaking up the tight cognitive clusters of
\nextremist theories.\u201d He suggested that \u201cgovernment agents
\n(and their allies) might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or
\neven real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy
\ntheories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic
\nor implications for political action,\u201d reports Raw Story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sunstein has also called for making websites liable for comments posted in response to articles. His book, On Rumors: How Falsehoods Spread, Why We Believe Them, What Can Be Done<\/em>, was criticized by some as \u201ca blueprint for online censorship.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Infowars office has been visited on numerous occasions by the
\nFBI as a result of people posting violent comments in response to
\narticles. Since the government now employs people to post such comments
\nin an attempt to undermine conspiracy websites, if a law were passed
\nmaking websites accountable, Sunstein\u2019s program would allow the
\ngovernment to obliterate such sites from the web merely by having their
\nown hired goons post threats against public figures.<\/p>\n

The fact that the government is being forced to hire armies of
\ntrolls in an effort to silence the truth shows how worried they are
\nabout the effect we are having in waking up millions of people to their
\ntyranny.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
