Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) \u2014 The Federal Reserve Bank of New York
\nwill be compelled to hand over documents related to American
\nInternational Group Inc.\u2019s government bailout after a House
\noversight committee chairman said he will issue a subpoena.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo help the committee\u2019s investigation of payments made
\nby AIG to its counterparties, I am issuing a subpoena today to the
\nFederal Reserve Bank of New York,\u201d Edolphus Towns, the New York
\nDemocrat who runs the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said
\nin an e-mailed statement. \u201cThis subpoena will provide the
\ncommittee with documents that will shed light on how and why taxpayer
\ndollars were used for a backdoor bailout.\u201d<\/p>\n


<\/a><\/p>\n

Towns\u2019 attempt to force the New York Fed to provide documents
\ncomes after the ranking Republican on the committee, Darrell Issa of
\nCalifornia, obtained e-mails showing the regulator pushed AIG to
\nwithhold information from public filings about payments to banks. The
\nNew York Fed in November declined to provide some documents Issa was
\nseeking without a subpoena, Issa said in a letter to Towns today.<\/p>\n

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was president of the New
\nYork Fed when AIG was rescued, had been asked by Towns to testify
\nduring hearings scheduled for next week. The New York Fed\u2019s
\ngeneral counsel, Thomas Baxter, said last week that Geithner
\nwasn\u2019t aware of efforts to limit New York-based AIG\u2019s
\nbailout disclosures because he didn\u2019t think the issue merited
\nGeithner\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n
