‘Sea water under an East Antarctic ice shelf showed no sign of higher temperatures, first tests showed today.<\/font><\/p>\n

Despite fears of a thaw
\nlinked to global warming that could bring higher world ocean levels,
\ntests conducted on the Fimbul Ice Shelf showed the sea water is still
\naround freezing point.
\nThanks to sensors, lowered through three holes drilled in the shelf,
\nscientists have discovered the water is not at higher temperatures
\nwidely blamed for the break-up of 10 shelves on the Antarctic
\nPeninsula, the most northerly part of the frozen continent.<\/font><\/p>\n
