To be more<br \/>\n        specific, the field of quantum information studies the implications that quantum<br \/>\n        mechanics has on the fundamental nature of information.<br \/>\n        By studying this relationship between quantum theory and information,<br \/>\n        it is possible to design a new type of<br \/>\n        computer&#8212;<em>a quantum computer<\/em>.<br \/>\n        A largescale,<br \/>\n        working quantum computer&#8212;the kind of quantum computer some<br \/>\n        scientists think we might see in 50 years&#8212;would be capable<br \/>\n        of performing some tasks impossibly quickly.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n        To date, the two most promising uses for such a device are<br \/>\n        <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grover's_algorithm\">quantum search<\/a> and<br \/>\n        <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shor's_algorithm\">quantum factoring<\/a>.<br \/>\n        To understand the power of a quantum<br \/>\n        search, consider classically searching a phonebook for the name<br \/>\n        which matches an unknown phone number.<br \/>\n        If the phonebook has 10,000<br \/>\n        entries, on average you&#8217;ll need to look through about half of<br \/>\n        them&#8212;5,000 entries&#8212;before you get lucky.  A quantum<br \/>\n        search algorithm only needs to guess 100 times.
