{"id":206074,"date":"2010-01-20T22:36:42","date_gmt":"2010-01-21T02:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inspiredeconomist.com\/2010\/01\/21\/us-postal-service-delivering-sustainability\/"},"modified":"2010-01-20T22:36:42","modified_gmt":"2010-01-21T02:36:42","slug":"us-postal-service-delivering-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/206074","title":{"rendered":"US Postal Service:  Delivering Sustainability?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/inspiredeconomist.com\/files\/2010\/01\/pobox-go_4898.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1735\" src=\"http:\/\/go635254.s3.amazonaws.com\/inspiredeconomist\/files\/2010\/01\/pobox-go_4898.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">While the U.S. Postal Service bleeds red with billions of dollars in financial loses ($3.8 billion in 2008), they keep earning environmental accolades for their green roofs and energy conserving initiatives. <span> <\/span>Today, some post offices are even LEED certified by the US Green Building Council.<span> <\/span>As I wrote about last week, <a href=\"http:\/\/gas2.org\/2010\/01\/14\/from-stagecoach-to-electric-t3s-and-citivans-us-postal-service-delivering-green\/\">the US Postal Service has always been on the leading edge<\/a> with respect to experimenting with fuel efficient vehicles \u2013 even if they\u2019ve been unsuccessful in garnering the widespread adoption of these alternatively fueled vehicles outside their test markets.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">So what gives?<span> <\/span>How could the US Postal Service be in such dire straits with all their green initiatives and their \u201cfleet of feet\u201d making deliveries door-to-door on foot?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Failing to Adapt to Change<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">This shouldn\u2019t be new news:<span> <\/span>For years, Americans have been moving away from hard copy to electronic forms of communication.<span> <\/span>Many of us have gotten fed up with the piles of unwanted mail solicitations and catalogs by the pound by getting our names and addresses on \u201cDo Not Solicit\u201d lists with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmachoice.org\/dma\/member\/regist.action\">Direct Marketing Association<\/a>.<span> <\/span>We\u2019ve opted out of banks\u2019 direct marketing schemes for credit cards and insurance.<span> <\/span>We\u2019ve signed up for electronic bill pay.
