{"id":208695,"date":"2010-01-21T07:52:07","date_gmt":"2010-01-21T12:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thehollywoodliberal.com\/2010\/01\/21\/media-advance-dubious-claim-that-ma-senate-election-was-a-referendum-on-obama\/"},"modified":"2010-01-21T07:52:07","modified_gmt":"2010-01-21T12:52:07","slug":"media-advance-dubious-claim-that-ma-senate-election-was-a-referendum-on-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/208695","title":{"rendered":"Media advance dubious claim that MA Senate election was a referendum on Obama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/feeds.mediamatters.org\/~r\/mediamatters\/latest\/~3\/2gAl7FokHTc\/201001200006\" >Media advance  dubious claim that MA Senate election was a referendum on  Obama <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press, the <em>New York Post<\/em>, and MSNBC&#8217;s Joe Scarborough  advanced the claim that the Massachusetts special U.S. Senate election was, in  Scarborough&#8217;s words, &#8220;a rejection of Barack Obama.&#8221; But election night polling  showing that the majority of  Massachusetts voters approve of Obama&#8217;s job performance undermines  this claim, and Scott Brown himself has stated that the race was &#8220;not a  referendum on Obama.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Media advance  claim that MA election was referendum on Obama<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>AP: &#8220;Race seen as  a referendum on Obama&#8217;s first year in office.&#8221;<\/strong> The AP wrote in a  January 20 <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.yahoo.com%2Fs%2Fap%2F20100120%2Fap_on_go_pr_wh%2Fus_obama_ap_poll\">article<\/a>  that the Massachusetts Senate race was &#8220;seen as a referendum on Obama&#8217;s first  year in office.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>NY  Post<\/em>: &#8220;Republicans  said the race was a referendum on Obama.&#8221;<\/strong> A January 20 <em>New York Post<\/em> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nypost.com%2Fp%2Fnews%2Fnational%2Fhuge_kick_in_the_x9DotgLc4yyc5EcGBBT3JN\">article<\/a>  claimed that &#8220;[g]leeful Republicans said the race was a referendum on Obama.&#8221;  The <em>Post<\/em> then quoted a National  Republican Senatorial Committee statement as saying, &#8220;Democrats nationwide  should be on notice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scarborough: Election a  &#8220;rejection of Barack Obama.&#8221;<\/strong> On the January 20 edition of  MSNBC&#8217;s <em>Morning Joe<\/em>, Scarborough  said of the Senate race, &#8220;[A]nyway you look at it, this is a rejection of Barack  Obama.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Exit polls of MA voters show  majority support for Obama<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2> <\/h2>\n<p><strong><strong>Rasmussen: Fifty-three percent of MA voters approve of  Obama job performance. <\/strong><\/strong>In  its election night <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rasmussenreports.com%2Fpublic_content%2Fpolitics%2Felections2%2Felection_2010%2Felection_2010_senate_elections%2Fmassachusetts%2Fbrown_wins_stunning_victory_in_massachusetts\">polling<\/a>,  Rasmussen Reports found that 53 percent of Massachusetts voters  &#8220;approve of the way that Barack Obama  has handled his job as President.&#8221; As  <em><em>Media Matters for  America<\/em><\/em> has <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/research\/201001150002\">documented<\/a>, pollster  Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports, reportedly worked for President  George W. Bush&#8217;s re-election campaign and for the Republican National Committee  in 2003 and 2004.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fabrizio,  McLaughlin &amp; Associates: Obama held a 59 percent favorability mark and 55  percent job approval rating among MA voters.<\/strong> A January 20 <em>Politico<\/em> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.politico.com%2Fnews%2Fstories%2F0110%2F31708_Page2.html%23ixzz0d9eLKtKA\">article<\/a> reported that a Fabrizio,  McLaughlin &amp; Associates exit poll found that &#8220;Obama&#8217;s personal favorability  remained high with voters.&#8221; The poll found that &#8220;Obama boasted a 59 percent  favorability mark&#8221; and &#8220;Obama&#8217;s job approval rating even stayed at a respectable  55 percent as voters trekked to the ballot box to oppose the candidate he  campaigned for just two days earlier. The president even earned a passing mark  on his handling of the economy (50 percent approval) and received a clear  majority&#8217;s support for his work in the war in Afghanistan (59 percent  approval).&#8221; Fabrizio, McLaughlin &amp; Associates is a Republican polling  firm.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Even Brown himself stated that the  election was &#8220;not a referendum on the president&#8221;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><strong>Brown&#8217;s &#8220;Last Pitch&#8221;: &#8220;It&#8217;s not a  referendum on the president. There are many  issues.&#8221;<\/strong><\/strong> In his January 18 &#8220;Last Pitch&#8221;  interview with Boston&#8217;s ABC affiliate, Brown <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebostonchannel.com%2Fvideo%2F22267317%2Findex.html\">said<\/a>  of the race: &#8220;It&#8217;s not a referendum on the president.
