{"id":211888,"date":"2010-01-22T07:05:49","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T12:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.skyscrapercity.com\/showthread.php?t=1051231"},"modified":"2010-01-22T07:05:49","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T12:05:49","slug":"work-starts-to-demolish-unsafe-sunderland-car-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/211888","title":{"rendered":"Work starts to demolish unsafe Sunderland car park"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/news\/Work-starts-to-demolish-unsafe.6005847.jp\" >http:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/news\/W&#8230;afe.6005847.jp<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/editorial.jpress.co.uk\/web\/Upload\/SEJJ\/\/TH1_221201016Marketjan22.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin:20px; margin-top:5px; \">\n<div class=\"smallfont\" style=\"margin-bottom:2px\">Quote:<\/div>\n<table cellpadding=\"6\" cellspacing=\"0\" border=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tr>\n<td class=\"alt2\">\n<hr \/>\n<p>\t\t\t\tWork has begun to dismantle the condemned multi-storey car park above Sunderland&#8217;s Jacky White&#8217;s Market.<\/p>\n<p>The city council was forced to close the Central Area Multi-Storey building in December 2008 after fears it could collapse.<\/p>\n<p>The 391-space car park, opened in 1966, was closed within hours of a engineer&#8217;s survey which deemed the building unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>Traders at Jacky White&#8217;s feared for their livelihoods when plans to move the market were uncovered by the Echo in January last year.<\/p>\n<p>But council chiefs put forward a \u00a32.9million plan to save the historic market hall and keep it open while the work is done overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say repair and refurbishment of the structure will cost about \u00a36million and the work will take almost a year to complete.<\/p>\n<p>The bill for temporary propping measures and consultants&#8217; fees already stands at \u00a3200,000 and will be met from the existing budget.<\/p>\n<p>Contractors began putting temporary measures in place this week which will allow work on the car park to proceed safely while the market remains open underneath.<\/p>\n<p>Demolition work will remove the unstable top levels of the structure and leave and repair the bottom two-tiers of the car park.<\/p>\n<p>Lib Dem councillor Paul Dixon, of Millfield, who campaigned on behalf of market traders and residents who rely on the car park said it was good news work had begun.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &quot;Hopefully at the end of it all the council will provide parking for the residents of the town centre flats.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The two remaining levels had been earmarked for that purpose but the council now says it has not made its mind up yet.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Consultants said both lifts have been decommissioned as are &quot;beyond economic repair&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Pickering, Deputy Executive Director of City Services, said: &quot;The work is being undertaken outside of the market opening hours to minimise disruption and will continue for two months. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;The work is being carried out in advance of the forthcoming demolition of the multi-storey car park.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The demolition is planned to commence in May and to continue until December.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No decision has yet been made regarding the future of the roof top area above Jacky White&#8217;s Market.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Page 1 of 1<br \/>\nLast Updated: 22 January 2010 9:51 AM<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>http:\/\/www.sunderlandecho.com\/news\/W&#8230;afe.6005847.jp Quote: Work has begun to dismantle the condemned multi-storey car park above Sunderland&#8217;s Jacky White&#8217;s Market.
