{"id":212708,"date":"2010-01-22T12:10:21","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T17:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/childrenshospitalblog.org\/?p=4519"},"modified":"2010-01-22T12:10:21","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T17:10:21","slug":"kids-use-media-for-almost-8-hours-a-day-%e2%80%93-now-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/212708","title":{"rendered":"Kids use media for almost 8 hours a day \u2013 Now what?"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4293\" title=\"teen girl with headphones on with laptop\" src=\"http:\/\/childrenshospitalblog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/stockphotopro_280148NQH_young_teen_girl_-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"teen girl with headphones on with laptop\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" \/>This week the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kff.org\/\">Kaiser Family Foundation<\/a> released a <a title=\"report from the Kaiser Family Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/cl.exct.net\/?ju=fe2b167276620d7b751775&amp;ls=fdf710777560047474137875&amp;m=feef10787c6201&amp;l=fe9313797167047974&amp;s=fe23157272650d7b741c79&amp;jb=ffcf14&amp;t=\" >report<\/a> detailing just how much media kids are using.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s going on?<\/strong><br \/>\nA new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span> confirms that media are a constant presence in kids&#8217; environments:<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <strong>Kids spend more time using media than they spend in school:<\/strong> Kids use TV, music, computers, video games, movies and print for a total of 7 hours and 38 minutes a day.<span id=\"more-4519\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong> Kids have media in their pockets and bedrooms: <\/strong>66% of kids own a cell phone, 76% own an MP3 player, 71% have a TV in their bedroom, 50% have a\u00a0gaming\u00a0system in their bedroom.<strong> <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kids are media multi-tasking:<\/strong> For more than 25% of the time kids spend using media, they are using two types of media at once (e.g. watching TV\u00a0and chatting online)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why should I care?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kids learn from what they see and hear. <\/strong>All media are educational. Some teach accurate, healthful lessons, while others teach misleading and harmful lessons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kids need time for healthy activities. <\/strong>If media are constantly in use, kids may not have time for the activities that will keep them healthy: eating balanced meals with family, doing homework, being physically active, playing creatively, and, most importantly, sleeping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can I do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create limits and rules around media. <\/strong>The Kaiser report found that kids whose parents had any kind of <a title=\"rules about media\" href=\"http:\/\/cl.exct.net\/?ju=fe2a167276620d7b751776&amp;ls=fdf710777560047474137875&amp;m=feef10787c6201&amp;l=fe9313797167047974&amp;s=fe23157272650d7b741c79&amp;jb=ffcf14&amp;t=\">rules about media<\/a> used 1\/3 less media than those whose homes had no rules at all.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep media in common areas.<\/strong> Keep dinner time TV-free, leave the computer in the family room and if you don&#8217;t have  <a title=\"TV in a child's bedroom\" href=\"http:\/\/cl.exct.net\/?ju=fe29167276620d7b751777&amp;ls=fdf710777560047474137875&amp;m=feef10787c6201&amp;l=fe9313797167047974&amp;s=fe23157272650d7b741c79&amp;jb=ffcf14&amp;t=\">TV in your child&#8217;s bedroom<\/a> yet, keep it that way.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teach active, critical media use. <\/strong>Engage kids in  <a href=\"http:\/\/cl.exct.net\/?ju=fe28167276620d7b751778&amp;ls=fdf710777560047474137875&amp;m=feef10787c6201&amp;l=fe9313797167047974&amp;s=fe23157272650d7b741c79&amp;jb=ffcf14&amp;t=\" >thinking about the media<\/a> they use, rather than passively consuming it.
