And to make matters worse, our shoes pick up particles of this carcinogen every time we are outside, and we bring into our homes. This is all the more reason to remember to take your shoes off when entering your home, especially if you have little ones crawling around. Pavements in areas east of the continental divide are usually coated with a coal-tar based sealant, which research has found to have 1000 times more\u00a0<a\ntitle=\"Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polycyclic_aromatic_hydrocarbon\" >polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons<\/a> (PAHs) than the asphalt based sealant coating pavements west of the continental divide.
