{"id":217472,"date":"2010-01-12T02:00:16","date_gmt":"2010-01-12T07:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"urn:newsml:sports.yahoo,yhoo:20050301:mma,article,yhoo-ept_sports_mma_experts-213007:1"},"modified":"2010-01-12T02:00:16","modified_gmt":"2010-01-12T07:00:16","slug":"ap-report-ufc-sells-10-percent-stake-to-uae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/217472","title":{"rendered":"AP report: UFC sells 10 percent stake to UAE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/a323.yahoofs.com\/ymg\/ept_sports_mma_experts__16\/ept_sports_mma_experts-201455984-1263068166.jpg?ymGgnfCDLU_qzyUE\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After strong whispers over the weekend that multiple trips by UFC officials to Abu Dhabi were to negotiate the sale of a 10 percent minority stake, the news became official today when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/sports\/mma\/2010-01-11-abu-dhabi-ufc_N.htm\" >the promotion released the information to AP<\/a>:&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/topics\/topic\/Ultimate+Fighting+Championship\" title=\"More news, photos about UFC\">UFC<\/a><br \/>\nco-owner Lorenzo Fertitta told The Associated Press that the deal with Flash<br \/>\nEntertainment, a subsidiary owned by the emirate&#8217;s government, was done to<br \/>\ncreate increased value for UFC and help the mixed martial arts league expand in<br \/>\nthe Middle East and Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inside-copy\">Neither Fertitta nor Ossama Khoreibi, chairman of Flash,<br \/>\nwould estimate UFC&#8217;s worth or say what Flash paid for the newly issued shares in<br \/>\nZuffa LLC, its parent company. Fertitta says terms of the deal are<br \/>\nconfidential.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Reports initially surfaced back in October that the UFC was looking for minority investors:&nbsp; <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&quot;We made the decision early on that if we were to bring on<br \/>\na partner, it wasn&#8217;t for financial reasons,&quot; Fertitta said. &quot;We didn&#8217;t need to<br \/>\nraise any money, that wasn&#8217;t the purpose. If we were going to bring somebody it<br \/>\nwas going to be with someone that could really be a true strategic partner and<br \/>\ncould help create an increased value for the company long term.&quot;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Flash is now ahead of Dana White in the ownership pecking order. White owns nine percent, Flash owns 10 percent while the Fertittas, Lorenzo and his brother Frank III, each own 40.5 percent.<a name=\"remaining-content\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The infusion of money also opens speculation that the Fertittas could use the money as a crutch for their struggling gaming company, Station Casinos: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Fertitta would not say what would be done with the money Flash invested or<br \/>\nwhether it would stay in UFC. <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/topics\/topic\/Organizations\/Companies\/Gaming\/Station+Casinos\" title=\"More news, photos about Station Casinos\">Station<br \/>\nCasinos<\/a> Inc., where Frank Fertitta is chairman and CEO and Lorenzo Fertitta<br \/>\nis vice chairman, has a pending bankruptcy case in Nevada that is separate from<br \/>\nUFC. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s all part of the UFC&#8217;s plan for global expansion: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&quot;The sport has incredible potential and the commercial<br \/>\nopportunities were very obvious to us,&quot; Khoreibi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inside-copy\">&quot;We&#8217;re building a global brand,&quot; Fertitta said. &quot;It&#8217;s never<br \/>\nbeen done before in the fight business.&quot;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"inside-copy\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px\">UFC is rumored to be holding its first fight card in the middle east on Apr. 10 in Abu Dhabi.
