margin-bottom: 0px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas-based <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">anti-Semi<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">tic <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">group known for picketing at funerals of American soldiers and victims of anti-gay hate crimes, is planning a protest in front of Stanford\u2019s Hillel House next Friday morning, Jan. 29, according to the group\u2019s Web site and confirmed by a group spokesperson this week.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">News of the planned protest started circulating on Stanford e-mail lists Thursday night as students discussed responses to the group\u2019s arrival, set for 8:10 a.m.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hillel and the Jewish Student Association Friday afternoon announced a peaceful \u201cgathering for unity and diversity\u201d to be held next Friday morning at 8 a.m.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> outside Hillel, as the Westboro group is expected to arrive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cWe will not engage the protestors, only each other,\u201d the Stanford groups said in a written statement.<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cThis is an opportunity for all of us from across Stanford to join together in honor of our shared values of pluralism and diversity in the face of bigotry and hatred.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A spokesperson for <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Stanford<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Department of Public Safety said Friday the department is aware of the church\u2019s plans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cW<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">e have heard about that<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and like any group or whatnot that&#8217;s coming on campus<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> we&#8217;re always here evaluating if there needs to be traffic control or any special arrangements made or whatnot to make sure that everybody is safe and that University business continues<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,\u201d said department spokesperson William Larson.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cPeople have freedom of speech, and we protect that as well,\u201d<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Larson said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas-based anti-Semitic group known for picketing at funerals of American soldiers and victims of anti-gay hate crimes, is planning a protest in front of Stanford\u2019s Hillel House next Friday morning, Jan. 29, according to the group\u2019s Web site and confirmed by a group spokesperson this week.
