{"id":217822,"date":"2010-01-22T15:51:26","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T20:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/?p=6061"},"modified":"2010-01-22T15:51:26","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T20:51:26","slug":"national-science-foundation-partners-with-queensborough-community-college-to-provide-technology-scholarships-to-qualified-graduating-high-school-seniors-%e2%80%94-scholarship-application-deadline-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/217822","title":{"rendered":"National Science Foundation Partners with Queensborough Community College to Provide Technology Scholarships to Qualified Graduating High School Seniors  \u2014 Scholarship Application Deadline is March 1, 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Queensborough Community College has been awarded twenty-two, $6,000 Technology Scholarships for qualified graduating high school seniors through a National Science Foundation grant for study in Electrical Engineering Technology and Laser &amp; Fiber Optics Technology. <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Interested graduating high school seniors must apply by March 1, 2010.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an unprecedented opportunity for graduating high school seniors to come to Queensborough and reap the benefits of the College\u2019s personalized academic attention\u2014tuition free,\u201d says Stu Asser, \u201967, Professor and Chairperson, Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET), who co-authored the grant proposal with Dr. David Lieberman, Professor and Chairperson, Physics Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe need for skilled workers in science and technology is expected to dramatically increase over the next 30 years,\u201d comments Dr. Lieberman. \u201cThrough this program, students can take advantage of the College\u2019s partnerships with local industries that often lead to internships, and jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, students who graduate from Queensborough are employed at competitive starting salaries in positions such as fiber optics technicians, electrical designers, laser safety officers and field engineers, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>All of the first time, full-time students in the Technology Scholarship Program will be enrolled in the Freshman Academy for Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM)\u2014one of six <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qcc.cuny.edu\/academies\/\">Freshman Academies<\/a> at Queensborough\u2014participating in High Impact Learning activities, such as writing intensive courses and virtual learning communities, plus benefit from the personalized academic and student support services that each academy student receives.<\/p>\n<p>With six active, NSF multi-year grants totaling nearly $4.5 million, Queensborough is in the top 1% of community colleges in the number of NSF grant awards, and sixth in total dollars&#8211;<em>nationwide<\/em>. In addition, Queensborough was the largest recipient of National Science Foundation (NSF) education funding of <em>all<\/em> the community colleges within The City University of New York (CUNY) in the 2008-2009 fiscal year (Source: NSF Awards database).<\/p>\n<p>Queensborough Community College, a College of The City University of New York, has embarked on a banner academic year with the celebration of its 50<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary, the launch of the Freshman Academies and the opening of the new Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center. Queensborough, located on a picturesque 37-acre site in Bayside, Queens, offers a rich liberal arts and science curriculum, as well as career and pre-professional courses. Over half of the faculty holds doctorates compared with 21% of faculty in other community colleges nationwide.
