{"id":218102,"date":"2010-01-14T08:47:27","date_gmt":"2010-01-14T13:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"tag:www.southernstudies.org,2010:\/\/5.12098"},"modified":"2010-01-19T11:05:58","modified_gmt":"2010-01-19T16:05:58","slug":"south-florida-swings-into-action-for-haiti-plus-how-you-can-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/218102","title":{"rendered":"South Florida swings into action for Haiti (plus: how you can help)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.southernstudies.org\/Haiti.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Haiti.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.southernstudies.org\/assets_c\/2010\/01\/Haiti-thumb-250x248.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px; float: right;\" width=\"250\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/span>A Catholic Relief Services official is calling Haiti&#8217;s devastating earthquake this week &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.baltimoresun.com\/news\/faith\/2010\/01\/crs_haiti_chief_it_is_a_disast.html\">the disaster of the century<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --><br \/>\n<a class=\"addthis_button\" href=\"http:\/\/www.addthis.com\/bookmark.php?v=250&amp;username=xa-4b4f470d1688e2c6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s7.addthis.com\/static\/btn\/v2\/lg-share-en.gif\" alt=\"Bookmark and Share\" style=\"border: 0pt none ;\" width=\"125\" height=\"16\" \/><\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/s7.addthis.com\/js\/250\/addthis_widget.js#username=xa-4b4f470d1688e2c6\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- AddThis Button END --><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a disaster that especially hits home for the growing Haitian community in Florida, which has been one of the top destinations for Haitian immigrants starting in the 1960s. <\/p>\n<p>The 2000 Census found that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epodunk.com\/ancestry\/Haitian.html\">23 of the 35 U.S. communities with the highest percentage of Haitian-Americans are in Florida<\/a>, and the Miami Herald is reporting today that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/americas\/haiti\/story\/1424140.html\">South Florida communities are in full-scale mobilization<\/a> to channel relief to Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis has pushed the White House to change course on a key issue facing these communities: the U.S. government&#8217;s controversial plans to deport over 30,000 Haitians. As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southernstudies.org\/2009\/02\/will-obama-help-haitian-immigrants.html\">Facing South reported last spring<\/a>, many of these were refugees from 2008&#8217;s deadly hurricanes, which displaced up to 80% of Haiti&#8217;s population.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, U.S. immigration officials said they would <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/nationworld\/2010787169_haitidig14.html\">stop deporting Haitians<\/a> back to the ravaged country, but they <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/nationworld\/2010787169_haitidig14.html\">stopped short of granting them Temporary Protected Status<\/a> which has been given to nationals of other countries fleeing natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement yesterday, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiacfla.org\/inthenews.php#213\">Florida Immigrant Action Coalition argued<\/a> that granting Temporary Protected Status would have immediate benefits to Haiti&#8217;s relief efforts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Granting TPS to Haitians here would allow some 30,000<br \/>\nHaitians to work legally and send remittances to loved ones in Haiti.<br \/>\nThese remittances are a vital lifeline, particularly in times of<br \/>\ndisaster. The money goes directly to Haitians on the island,<br \/>\nencouraging them to stay and rebuild their country. TPS would, thus,<br \/>\ndiscourage Haitians from attempting dangerous sea voyages to get to the<br \/>\nUnited States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>HOW YOU CAN HELP<\/b><\/p>\n<p>With hospitals, water supplies and other vital resources in Haiti in shambles, dozens of charities are mobilizing to provide immediate relief and fill in the gaps. <\/p>\n<p>For those in the Facing South community wanting to contribute to relief efforts, here are several groups that have a strong track record in Haiti and have swung into action, and which may not be as well known:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/doctorswithoutborders.org\/\">Doctors Without Borders<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.haitiaction.net\/About\/HERF\/1_12_10.html\">Haiti Emergency Relief Fund<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambifund.org\/\">Lambdi Fund for Haiti<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambifund.org\/\">Madre<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mds.mennonite.net\/\">Mennonite Disaster Service<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mds.mennonite.net\/\">Partners in Health<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let us know in the comments about other groups that might be good to support!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Catholic Relief Services official is calling Haiti&#8217;s devastating earthquake this week &#8220;the disaster of the century.&#8221; It&#8217;s a disaster that especially hits home for the growing Haitian community in Florida, which has been one of the top destinations for Haitian immigrants starting in the 1960s.
