{"id":218527,"date":"2010-01-22T17:11:28","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T22:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c5fcf53ef0120a7fefaea970b"},"modified":"2010-01-22T17:11:28","modified_gmt":"2010-01-22T22:11:28","slug":"man-dies-in-police-custody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/218527","title":{"rendered":"Man Dies in Police Custody"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong class=\"bodytextLARGE\"><\/strong><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Los Angeles:<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\nA 39-year-old man died while he was in police custody after a<br \/>\nMetropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) security sergeant found him<br \/>\nseriously injured and walking in the street.<\/p>\n<p>\nOn January 15, 2010, at about 3:52 a.m., an MTA security sergeant<br \/>\nnoticed a man walking in a westerly direction on Cesar Chavez Boulevard<br \/>\nfrom Broadway.\u00a0 The man was wearing only boxer shorts, a T-shirt and<br \/>\none shoe.\u00a0 He was bleeding badly from an apparent head wound and was<br \/>\nstaggering in his attempt to walk.\u00a0 The MTA security sergeant requested<br \/>\nassistance, which resulted in the response of Los Angeles Police<br \/>\nDepartment (LAPD) officers assigned to Central Patrol Division and<br \/>\nparamedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).<\/p>\n<p>\nThe responding officers attempted to communicate with the man, but<br \/>\nfound him to be unresponsive.\u00a0 As the LAFD Paramedics arrived, the man<br \/>\nwas still unresponsive and unrestrained.\u00a0 To prevent any additional<br \/>\ninjuries, a traffic hazard, and to facilitate medical treatment, the<br \/>\nofficers decided to place the man on the ground and handcuff him.\u00a0<br \/>\nParamedics transported the man to the University of Southern California<br \/>\nMedical Center where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p>\nInvestigators discovered evidence that the man had suffered some<br \/>\ntraumatic injury about two blocks from where the MTA security sergeant<br \/>\nhad first encountered him.\u00a0 At this time, it has not been determined<br \/>\nwhether the man was the victim of a hit-and-run traffic collision, or<br \/>\nif he was the victim of an assault or accident at that location or<br \/>\nelsewhere.\u00a0\u00a0 Investigators hope that an autopsy will provide clues<br \/>\nabout the exact cause and manner of the man\u2019s death.\u00a0 For now, his<br \/>\nidentity is being withheld until his family members are notified.<\/p>\n<p>\nBecause the man was in the custody of the LAPD when he died, Force<br \/>\nInvestigation Division has assumed primary responsibility for the<br \/>\ninvestigation and will work closely with detectives assigned to Central<br \/>\nTraffic Division. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nAnyone who may have seen this victim on January 15, 2010, or who has<br \/>\ninformation about this crime or incident is urged to call Central<br \/>\nTraffic Division detectives at 213-972-1825.\u00a0 During non-business hours<br \/>\nor on weekends, calls may be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7.\u00a0 Anyone<br \/>\nwishing to remain anonymous should call Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS<br \/>\n(800-222-8477).\u00a0 Tipsters may also contact Crimestoppers by texting to<br \/>\nphone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.\u00a0<br \/>\nAll text messages should begin with the letters \u201cLAPD.\u201d Tipsters may<br \/>\nalso go to LAPDOnline.org, click on &quot;webtips&quot; and follow the prompts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles:\u00a0 A 39-year-old man died while he was in police custody after a Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) security sergeant found him seriously injured and walking in the street.
