font-weight: bold;\"><br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">On Sunday, January 10, 2010,<br \/>\nat around 12:20 p.m. a Van Nuys community member called the Los Angeles<br \/>\nPolice Department\u2019s Communication Center to report that she saw man who<br \/>\nresembled a suspect whom she had seen on the television news the night<br \/>\nbefore.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">LAPD<br \/>\nOfficers went to the location where the person reporting last saw the<br \/>\nsuspect, a Laundromat in the 6800 block of Lennox Avenue.\u00a0\u00a0 Officers<br \/>\nfound the man in the laundry mat dressed only in boxer shorts; his<br \/>\nclothes were in a washing machine.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Officers<br \/>\nwere able to link a Black Ford Explorer parked in the parking lot to<br \/>\nthe suspect.\u00a0 The vehicle had been taken in a carjacking the previous<br \/>\nday in West Valley Area.\u00a0 He was taken into custody without incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The<br \/>\nsuspect has been identified as Tyreese Basey, a 31-year-old male Black<br \/>\nwhose last known address was in Los Angeles.\u00a0 Basey is being booked<br \/>\ninto Van Nuys jail for various charges including Robbery and Carjacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">This<br \/>\nwas an extraordinary example of the community, the media, and the LAPD<br \/>\nworking together to take a violent and dangerous offender off the<br \/>\nstreets of Los Angeles.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\"><br \/><\/br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Los Angeles:<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\nLos Angeles Police Department is asking for the public\u2019s help in<br \/>\nidentifying a suspect who victimized a number of innocent people and<br \/>\nput the entire community at risk early this morning.<\/p>\n<p>\nAt around 5:15 a.m., a suspect attempted to steal a car that was parked<br \/>\non Calhoun Street.\u00a0 He failed in that attempt.\u00a0 Thirty minutes later at<br \/>\naround 5:45 a.m. the same suspect carjacked a vehicle by simulating to<br \/>\na victim that he had a weapon in his waistband.\u00a0 This occurred at a<br \/>\nnearby donut shop located in the 13300 block of Victory Boulevard. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nThirty-five minutes later at around 6:20 a.m. the suspect had a<br \/>\nrollover single-car traffic accident at Sepulveda Boulevard and<br \/>\nSkirball Center Drive; the car collided with a tree causing the airbag<br \/>\nto deploy.\u00a0 The suspect got out of the vehicle by climbing through the<br \/>\nsunroof. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alt=\"\" border=\"1\" height=\"141\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lapdonline.org\/assets\/news%20releases\/NR10014ne.jpg\" width=\"250\"><\/img>At<br \/>\naround 6:40 a.m., the suspect entered a residence in the 3300 block of<br \/>\nRedrose Drive and demanded car keys from a 90-year-old couple.\u00a0 The<br \/>\nelderly couple managed to push the suspect away and lock the door.\u00a0<br \/>\nThen at around 6:45 a.m., the suspect was seen in a rear yard at a<br \/>\nhouse a short distance away.\u00a0 That home owner chased the suspect away.<\/p>\n<p><\/br><br \/>\nOne hour and thirty minutes after that, and one-half mile away, at<br \/>\nabout 8:15 a.m., the same suspect stole a black Eddie Bauer version of<br \/>\na Ford Explorer, license plate 4WVP668.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nThe suspect is described as a male black, black hair in dreadlocks or<br \/>\ncorn rows, 6\u2019-6\u20191\u201d in height, weighing 170-180 pounds, 30-35 years old.<br \/>\nHe was last seen wearing black pants, tan shirt and has a beard. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nInvestigators believe that the suspect may have sustained some injuries from the rollover collision or airbag deployment.<\/p>\n<p>\nInvestigators believe that because the one-man crime spree was so<br \/>\nunusual, there may have been some precipitating incident or personal<br \/>\ncrisis.\u00a0 Captain Egan said, \u201cHe was not just a criminal, but a<br \/>\ndesperate and reckless criminal.\u201d\u00a0 Egan added, \u201cIf you witnessed<br \/>\nanything unusual this morning or know of someone fitting this<br \/>\ndescription with unexplained injuries, please come forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nAnyone with information regarding this case is asked to call West<br \/>\nValley Area Detectives at 818-374-7730.\u00a0 During non-business hours or<br \/>\non weekends calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7.\u00a0 Anyone<br \/>\nwishing to remain anonymous should call Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS<br \/>\n(800-222-8477).\u00a0 Tipsters may also contact Crimestoppers by texting to<br \/>\nphone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.<br \/>\nAll text messages should begin with the letters \u201cLAPD.\u201d Tipsters may<br \/>\nalso go to LAPDOnline.org, click on &quot;webtips&quot;
