{"id":218662,"date":"2010-01-15T13:16:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-15T18:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/?p=35059"},"modified":"2010-01-15T13:16:22","modified_gmt":"2010-01-15T18:16:22","slug":"hasty-taps-hathaway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/218662","title":{"rendered":"Hasty taps Hathaway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hastypudding.org\/\">Hasty Pudding Theatricals<\/a> of Harvard University has chosen actress Anne Hathaway as<strong> <\/strong>the 2010 Woman of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Award festivities will be held Jan. 28 at 2:30 p.m. when Hathaway will lead a parade through the streets of Cambridge. Afterward, the president of the theatricals, Clifford Murray \u201910, and the vice president of the cast, Derek Mueller \u201910, will roast the actress and present her with her Pudding Pot at 3:15 p.m. at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ofa.fas.harvard.edu\/theater\/nct.php\">New College Theatre<\/a>, the Hasty Pudding\u2019s historic home in the heart of Harvard Square since 1889. After the roast, several numbers from the Hasty Pudding Theatrical\u2019s 162nd production, \u201cCommie Dearest,\u201d will be previewed at about 3:40 p.m., followed by a press conference at about 4:10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Man of the Year event will take place on Feb. 5.\u00a0 The recipient of this year\u2019s award will be announced next week.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the events, please contact the Hasty Pudding Theatricals\u2019 press manager, D.J. He can be reached at 516.729.7858 or by e-mail at press@hastypudding.org.<\/p>\n<p>The awards are presented annually to performers who have made a &#8220;lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment.&#8221;\u00a0 Established in 1951, the Woman of the Year award has been granted to many notable entertainers, including Meryl Streep, Katharine Hepburn, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Elizabeth Taylor, and, most recently, Ren\u00e9e Zellweger. The Man of the Year award was established in 1963. Its past recipients include Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, Robert De Niro, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Anthony Hopkins, Bruce Willis, and, last year, James Franco.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing to emerge as one of Hollywood\u2019s most engaging talents, Hathaway shot to stardom in films such as \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada.\u201d She went on to receive nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance in Jonathan Demme\u2019s recently acclaimed \u201cRachel Getting Married,\u201d for which she was named best actress by the National Board of Review.<\/p>\n<p>Hathaway has impressed audiences with her range as an actress, from her lauded dramatic performances in \u201cBecoming Jane,\u201d \u201cPassengers,\u201d and \u201cBrokeback Mountain,\u201d to her comedic turns in such films as \u201cGet Smart,\u201d \u201cThe Princess Diaries,\u201d and \u201cElla Enchanted.\u201d Hathaway also took to the New York stage last summer in Shakespeare in the Park\u2019s production of \u00a0\u201cTwelfth Night,\u201d playing Viola.<\/p>\n<p>Hathaway will next star in the ensemble romantic comedy \u201cValentine\u2019s Day,\u201d to be released in February, and as the White Queen alongside Johnny Depp in Tim Burton\u2019s \u201cAlice in Wonderland,\u201d hitting theaters in March.<\/p>\n<p>Director Garry Marshall has said of her, \u201cThe multi-talented Hathaway is a combination of Julia Roberts, Audrey Hepburn, and Judy Garland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To purchase tickets to \u201cCommie Dearest,\u201d contact the New College box office at 617.495.5205.
