Have you seen the commercials about the <\/font><\/span>Sprite Step Off<\/font><\/a>, one of the self-proclaimed largest step show tournaments in history? I can’t lie. I cheered when I received notice from Sprite<\/a> that I got admission into this event. Watching step competitions was one of my favorite things to do after I transferred from <\/font>Northern Michigan University<\/font><\/a> to my alma mater <\/font>Lincoln University<\/font><\/a>. <\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n

Step shows were events that excited me since my elementary school days running home to see “A Different World<\/a><\/i>,” and it never wore off even through college–although I wasn’t interested in <\/font>pledging<\/font><\/a>. But I sure do remember applauding for Freddie Brooks when she finally learned to step like Whitley Gilbert and watching Jaleesa Vinson represent for Gilbert Hall.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n

I first heard about the <\/font>Sprite Step Off<\/font><\/a> while interviewing marketing company Commonground’s owners <\/font>Ahmad Islam<\/font><\/a> and <\/font>Sherman Wright<\/font><\/a>.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/p>\n

And when I saw the opening promo video<\/a> on the Sprite Step Off Web site<\/a>, I remembered all of my college days and even a couple of recent Greek events like the Delta Sigma Theta Nonviolence Event<\/font><\/a> and <\/font>Crossed the Play<\/font><\/a>. It’s a mix of the energy, the body music and the aggression that makes me love stepping so much. If you’ve never been to a Greek step show before, I’d check this one out.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n

The <\/font>Sprite Step Off<\/font><\/a> will be on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Regal Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the regional step competition starts at 7 p.m.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There will be live performances with Mr. “How Low<\/em>” or as you may know him, Ludacris<\/a>. Wale will also be performing. Another event for the night includes the McDonald’s Flavor Battle, which is a DJ competition with three different deejays. <\/font><\/p>\n
