Wade<\/em>.\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last November, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/HEALTH\/10\/15\/hospitals.ban.vbacs\/index.html\">Joy Szabo<\/a> packed her bags, left her husband and children, and moved 350 miles away from<br \/>\nhome to exercise choice. She didn\u2019t travel for the freedom to choose whether or<br \/>\nnot to continue her pregnancy. She was determined to have a vaginal birth after<br \/>\ncesarean (VBAC). Szabo\u2019s local hospital refused to allow her to have a vaginal<br \/>\nbirth, and the hospital CEO even threatened a court order to ensure that Szabo<br \/>\ngive birth via cesarean surgery.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMore and more women like Szabo are being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocatesforpregnantwomen.org\/main\/events\/napw_writing_contest\">refused the right<br \/>\nto give birth on their own terms<\/a> as more and more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ican-online.org\/ican-in-the-news\/trouble-repeat-cesareans\">hospitals ban women from VBACs<\/a> .<br \/>\nTrue, there are risks associated with VBAC, most notably uterine rupture, which<br \/>\ncan lead to mother and\/or infant death. However, there are also risks<br \/>\nassociated with cesarean surgery, including heavy bleeding and infection for<br \/>\nthe mother, breathing problems for the infant, and death.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nA woman must have the <a href=\"http:\/\/download.journals.elsevierhealth.com\/pdfs\/journals\/1526-9523\/PIIS1526952304000029.pdf\">freedom and support <\/a>to compare the risks of VBAC and the risks of cesarean surgery.
