Wade<\/em>.\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For me, a daughter of immigrants, working-class, US citizen,<br \/>\nradical, fat, able-bodied (right now) woman of Color, choice to me means<br \/>\nsurvival and self-determination. Each year, as the US remembers and \u201ccelebrates\u201d<br \/>\nRoe v. Wade, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.now.org\/issues\/abortion\/120904women-who-died.html\">I write something about Rosie Jimenez<\/a>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I may be too young to remember when she<br \/>\ndied, but I\u2019m old enough to know better than to forget her.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nA young working-class student and single Chicana mother of<br \/>\none daughter living in the US, Rosie was the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyde_Amendment\">first victim of the Hyde Amendment<\/a>, which disallowed Medicaid to cover abortion procedures to people needing them<br \/>\nand receiving Medicaid. Rosie died of an illegal abortion when she realized she<br \/>\nwas pregnant again and could not afford to cover the cost of an abortion.<br \/>\nRosie\u2019s death demonstrates the institutional classism, racism and \u2013isms\u2019 in<br \/>\ngeneral that still exists today for many people seeking reproductive health<br \/>\ncare in the US and all over the world.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nRosie died on October 3, 1977.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAs a daughter of immigrants from Puerto Rico, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libertadlatina.org\/Crisis_Forced_Sterilization.htm\">the country<br \/>\nwhere forced sterilization<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Combined_oral_contraceptive_pill\">birth control testing<\/a> by the US has a deep history, choice<br \/>\nmeans having control and power <strong><em>with<\/em><\/strong> my body, not just <strong><em>over<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nmy body. A body that is not valued as other bodies are in this country.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe<br \/>\nmere ability to love this brown bushy-haired big body in a country that still<br \/>\nhas colonial rule over my homeland is an act of rebellion and love. Because of<br \/>\nRoe v. Wade, and because of Rosie\u2019s death, I am able to sit here and write<br \/>\nthis. I am able to accomplish what Rosie had planned for herself and have<br \/>\nbecome a teacher. Because of Rosie, I can dream bigger, travel farther, educate<br \/>\nothers, and help people experiencing an abortion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amplifyyourvoice.org\/u\/Media_Justice\/2009\/10\/29\/What-did-the-doula-do\">as their abortion doula<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nBecause of Rosie I\u2019m a survivor. I exist.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\nI don\u2019t know where Rosie\u2019s daughter is today or if she knows<br \/>\nher mother\u2019s legacy. She is six years older than me; she is my peer. Today,<br \/>\nthis week, for as long as I am alive, I will remember her and her mother and<br \/>\nall they have both sacrificed for me; for us.
