{"id":219345,"date":"2009-12-02T14:16:49","date_gmt":"2009-12-02T19:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"tag:redtape.msnbc.com:\/\/25215d2fc393aee9c192a5d837ed9796"},"modified":"2009-12-02T14:16:49","modified_gmt":"2009-12-02T19:16:49","slug":"hidden-fees-more-annoying-than-dog-poop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/219345","title":{"rendered":"Hidden fees more annoying than dog poop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Noisy neighbors, traffic jams, and long checkout lines would find their way onto anyone&#39;s list of daily irritations.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>But when it comes to really raising people&#39;s blood pressure, nothing can compete with hidden fees, according to a new survey by Consumer Reports.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>In fact, companies taking money in sneaky ways was rated more than twice as annoying as another classic irritant: inaccurate weather reports.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Corporate misbehavior apparently smells so bad to consumers that hidden fees even far outpaced unscooped dog poop.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Negative interactions with companies dominated the rankings \u2013 which should be no surprise to regular Red Tape readers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>&quot;Not getting a human on the phone&quot; ranked second (Visit GetHuman.com for help with that), and &quot;incomprehensible bills,&quot; cracked the top five. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">&quot;We were surprised by that. I guess that the Al Rokers of the world are safe,&quot; said Mark Kotkin, director of survey research at Consumer Reports. &quot;But a lot of the electronics industries and financial industries were hit pretty hard, at least the billing part of those companies.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Rounding out the top five were two driving-related gripes: tailgating and cell phone use by drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/msnbc.com\" style=\"FLOAT: left\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Logo_mini\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451b0aa69e20120a6ff039f970b \" src=\"http:\/\/onthescene.msnbc.com\/.a\/6a00d83451b0aa69e20120a6ff039f970b-800wi\" style=\"MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" title=\"Logo_mini\" \/><\/a> The survey was conducted in September and results are published in the January issue of Consumer Reports. The magazine asked a random sample of 1,125 Americans to score 21 gripes on a 1-to-10 scale, 1 meaning an experience \u201cdoes not annoy you at all\u201d and 10 meaning it \u201cannoys you tremendously.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Of course, the survey was slightly tongue-in-cheek and not comprehensive. Just a few of choices that were missing from the list:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">*The White House party crashers <br \/>*Britney Spears<br \/>*Ex-girlfriend Facebook friend recommendations<br \/>*Christmas music in November <br \/>(You can add yours below)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">But it&#39;s still telling that hidden fees and customer service frustrations prevailed by such a wide margin, considering the competition that was on the list.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>It included: Waiting for repair people (9th), Very slow drivers (12th), and poor airline service (16th).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Several technology-related irritants were also included: unreliable Internet service (7th), Spam (10th), and passwords and PINs (20th).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">(To see the full chart, visit <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/magazine-archive\/2010\/january\/shopping\/what-bugs-america-most\/overview\/what-bugs-america-most-ov.htm\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Consumer Reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\"><strong>Women, older adults more irritated<br \/><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Perhaps a mere statistical curiosity, but the survey appears to confirm a few stereotypes about gripers: Women and adults over 50 were more prone to irritation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>In particular, women took more offense than men to items like speeding drivers and products that shrink but cost the same, while older adults expressed plenty of techno-frustration about passwords and cell phone usage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/11605721\/ns\/business-personal_finance\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Herbbox\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451b0aa69e20120a6792d57970c \" src=\"http:\/\/onthescene.msnbc.com\/.a\/6a00d83451b0aa69e20120a6792d57970c-800wi\" style=\"MARGIN: 4px; FLOAT: left\" title=\"Herbbox\" \/><\/a>Kotkin said the list of choices was intentionally designed to exclude family issues and employment issues (such as gossipy co-workers), in an effort to make the survey more relevant to consumer issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">While the survey was conducted partly for pure entertainment value (&quot;it was something lighter and fun. Fun is not normally part of Consumer Reports,&quot; Kotkin said) companies could take the results to heart.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>The second-biggest gripe, inability to get human help, could be easily solved by hiring more staff, he said.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>Firms looking for an edge during tough economic times could easily endear themselves to shoppers through improved service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Consumer can learn something, too, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">&quot;There are some things you can control by going to the right vendor, like bad cell phone service or spam,&quot; he said.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>&quot;People do have choices.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; FONT-SIZE: 12px\">Do you agree with hidden fees as top irritant?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&#0160; <\/span>What\u2019s missing from the list?
