{"id":221294,"date":"2010-01-23T19:25:10","date_gmt":"2010-01-24T00:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-01-23-will-googles-fight-with-china-stymie-climate-negotiations\/"},"modified":"2010-01-23T19:25:10","modified_gmt":"2010-01-24T00:25:10","slug":"will-googles-fight-with-china-stymie-climate-negotiations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/221294","title":{"rendered":"Will Google&#8217;s fight with China stymie climate negotiations?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tby Lisa Hymas <\/p>\n<p>If any progress is to be made in the global fight against<br \/>climate change&#8212;whether via diplomatic negotiations or <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-01-22-did-china-block-copenhagen-to-pave-way-for-domiance-in-cleantech\">cleantech<br \/>partnerships<\/a>&#8212;it will only happen through cooperation between the U.S.<br \/>and China.&nbsp; But the potential for<br \/>collaboration of any kind took a big blow this past week thanks to the Google<br \/>fracas.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/01\/23\/world\/asia\/23china.html\">Reports The<br \/>New York Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Beijing and Washington both initially tried to treat the Google case as mainly a commercial dispute. But Mrs. Clinton&#8217;s speech on Internet freedom on Thursday, with its cold war undertones, has catapulted the dispute from the realm of technology and cybersecurity to one of fundamental freedoms. China&#8217;s strongly worded response suggests that the tensions could spill over into other areas where the administration is eager for Chinese cooperation, including climate change and curtailing Iran&#8217;s nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Obama team is trying to tamp down the gloomy analysis, <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704509704575018491868895922.html\">reports<br \/>The Wall Street Journal<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Obama administration reacted to China&#8217;s accusation the U.S. was endangering bilateral relations with restraint. Michael Hammer, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said he believed the countries&#8217; ties would &#8220;continue to grow and strengthen&#8221; despite differences on several fronts.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s transparently wishful thinking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Add the Google mess to the list of other barriers to climate<br \/>progress that emerged this past week, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/blog\/the-vine\/did-scott-brown-kill-any-hope-tackling-climate-change\">Scott<br \/>Brown&#8217;s election<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-01-21-murkowskis-floor-speech-on-epa-regulations-was-full-of-deception\">Lisa<br \/>Murkowski&#8217;s resolution<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-01-20-u.n.-climate-panel-admits-himalaya-glacier-data-poorly-substanti\">IPCC&#8217;s<br \/>admission that it screwed up climate data<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/supreme-court-ruling-on-elections-puts-concept-of-any-kind-of-reform-into-d\">Supreme<br \/>Court&#8217;s evisceration of campaign finance limits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related Links:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-01-27-apples-new-ipad-is-deep-green-but-a-planet-saver-nope\/\">Apple&#8217;s new iPad is deep green, but a planet saver?
