\u0096<\/b><\/p>\n<p>As Senators grapple with how to salvage health care reform, they simultaneously want to change their legislative focus to jobs and the economy.* Before they can do that, they have to contend with a record $1.9 trillion debt limit increase.* The debate, which is expected to last all week, will highlight our looming entitlement crisis, excessive spending and the increasingly aggressive involvement of government in our economy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Major Senate Action \u0096<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Senate will continue to debate the debt limit increase (<a href=\"http:\/\/frwebgate.access.gpo.gov\/cgi-bin\/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&amp;docid=f:hj45rfs.txt.pdf\" >H J Res 45<\/a>).* Several amendments are expected, including one on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.szone.us\/..\/2010\/01\/11\/legislation-would-block-epa%e2%80%99s-co2-regulations\/\" >EPA regulations<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/Press\/Commentary\/ed120909a.cfm\" >spending caps<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/Research\/Budget\/wm2312.cfm\" >PAYGO<\/a> are possible.* Interestingly, the much hyped, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/Research\/Budget\/bg2360.cfm\" >fatally flawed<\/a>, Conrad-Gregg fiscal task force seems to lack support.* In response, the administration has proposed a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.szone.us\/..\/2010\/01\/20\/please-no-white-house-lame-duck-commission\/\" >lame duck<\/a> commission.<\/p>\n<p><b>Major Committee Action \u0096<\/b><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The      <a href=\"http:\/\/hsgac.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Hearings.Hearing&amp;Hearing_ID=a80bfb85-7906-4ff7-9e77-91268061041c\" >Homeland      Security Committee<\/a> will hold another hearing on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/Research\/NationalSecurity\/wm2751.cfm\" >Christmas      Day terrorist attack<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The      <a href=\"http:\/\/budget.senate.gov\/republican\/NewHearings&amp;Testi.htm\" >Budget      Committee<\/a> will hold a hearing on the outlook for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.szone.us\/..\/2010\/01\/20\/discretionary-spending-caps-a-good-first-step\/\" >federal      budget<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/Research\/Economy\/wm2755.cfm\" >economy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The      <a href=\"http:\/\/armed-services.senate.gov\/e_witnesslist.cfm?id=4351\" >Armed      Services Committee<\/a> will hold a closed door hearing on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.szone.us\/..\/2009\/09\/22\/five-things-about-homeland-security-that-nobody-is-discussing-4\/\" >cyber      security<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>House Cloakroom: Jan. 25 \u0096 29<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Analysis \u0096<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The House is in for a very short week focusing on two land bills which failed to pass the chamber the pervious week under suspension of the rules (requires a two-thirds majority to pass). *Behind the scenes the status of the health care bill remains in question following the election of Senator-elect Scott Brown in Massachusetts and should be a topic of discussion across the Hill this week. *Expect lawmakers to pivot to job creation measures in the coming weeks as the economy continues to struggle and unemployment remains high.* Make sure to suspension last week.<\/li>\n<li>President       Obama State      of the Union Speech on Wednesday, January 27th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Major Committee Action \u0096<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In      preparation for release of the budget on February 1st the <a href=\"http:\/\/budget.house.gov\/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=1724\" >House Budget      Committee<\/a> will be holding a hearing with Dr. Douglas Elmendorf,      Director of the Congressional Budget Office to discuss the budget and the      economic outlook.*<\/li>\n<li>The      <a href=\"http:\/\/armedservices.house.gov\/calendar_next_week.shtml\" >House      Armed Services Committee<\/a> will hold a hearing on how the U.S. should respond to Al      Qaida.* *<\/li>\n<li>And      lastly, the <a href=\"http:\/\/resourcescommittee.house.gov\/index.php?option=com_jcalpro&amp;Itemid=27&amp;extmode=view&amp;extid=317\" >House      Natural Resources Committee Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans, and      Wildlife<\/a> will hold a hearing on <a href=\"http:\/\/frwebgate.access.gpo.gov\/cgi-bin\/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&amp;docid=f:h4416ih.txt.pdf\" >HR
