Picking up where the network left off in 2009<\/a>, Fox News jumped into its first political campaign of the year, this time setting its sights on the U.S. Senate to help elect Republican Scott Brown to the seat previously held by Democrat Ted Kennedy. Fox News and other media conservatives anticipated and celebrated Brown\u2019s election with a hyperbolic fervor that would redden the faces of the \u201cObamaniacs\u201d they most despised in 2008. As conservative media saw it, in defeating Democratic challenger Martha Coakley in Massachusetts, Scott Brown took down Goliath, the 1980 Soviet Olympic hockey team<\/a>, the Berlin Wall<\/a>, and the British<\/a> Empire<\/a>. Before Brown assumed his seat in the Senate, he had been nominated by Drudge<\/a> and<\/a> Fox<\/a> News<\/a> to be our next president.<\/p>\n

Fox News didn\u2019t simply cheer from the sidelines of this contest. Indeed, the network actively aided<\/a> Brown\u2019s campaign. Fox News repeatedly hosted Brown in the days leading up to the election, and during each appearance, Brown directed viewers to his website to find out \u201chow to help with donating and volunteering.\u201d Fox News political analyst Dick Morris took it upon himself to urge viewers<\/a> to \u201cgo to DickMorris.com \u2026 to help elect Brown,\u201d because if \u201cwe win this fight, then there will never be another victory for Obama<\/a>.\u201d When asked<\/a> at a rally about \u201cethical questions\u201d raised by Fox News\u2019 advocacy for Brown, chief political correspondent Carl Cameron fled, saying he didn\u2019t have time to answer. But he did have the time to autograph \u201cBrown for Senate\u201d campaign materials and pose for pictures with Brown\u2019s volunteers, as Think Progress documented<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fox News also did Brown the favor of repeatedly misrepresenting remarks Coakley made to portray her as incompetent. America\u2019s News HQ<\/em> anchor Gregg Jarrett stated on January 17, \u201cMartha Coakley is out of step when she says things like terrorists are no longer in Afghanistan<\/a>, or in the debate saying, quote, \u2018We need to get taxes up.\u2019 \u201d Interpreting Coakley\u2019s remarks in this way requires a willing suspension<\/a> of basic verbal reasoning skills; and that was Fox\u2019s \u201cstraight news<\/a>\u201d programming. On Fox & Friends<\/em>, Steve Doocy actually claimed<\/a> that Coakley \u201csuggested the Taliban [are] gone from Afghanistan<\/a>,\u201d and Michael Scheuer<\/a> declared<\/a> that Coakley \u201cdoesn\u2019t seem to mind\u201d that \u201cwe are losing there.\u201d For his part, Glenn Beck<\/a> accused<\/a> Coakley of \u201creligious bigotry\u201d for saying<\/a> that those who would \u201cdeny emergency contraception to a woman who came in who had been raped\u201d probably \u201cshouldn\u2019t work in the emergency room.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
