\"alien\"The Telegraph<\/a> reports that the search for alien life forms should be conducted here on Earth rather than in outer space, according to a leading scientist:<\/p>\n

Professor Paul Davies, a physicist at Arizona University will tell a meeting\u00a0at the Royal Society<\/a><\/a><\/strong> that the\u00a0best way of proving that extra-terrestrial life exists elsewhere in the\u00a0universe is to use evidence from earth.\u00a0The meeting at the Royal Society<\/a>, which will include representatives from Nasa<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0the European Space Agency<\/a> and the UN Office for Outer space<\/a> Affairs<\/a><\/strong> marks the 5th anniversary of the Search<\/a> for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI)<\/a><\/strong> programme. Lord Rees,\u00a0President of the Royal Society<\/a> will also lead one of the sessions.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Prof Davies said: We need to give up the notion that ET is sending us<\/a> some sort of customised message and take a new approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

He suggested that the search could focus on deserts, volcanic vents, salt-saturated lakes and the dry valleys of Antarctica \u2013 places where ordinary life struggles to survive \u2013 to find \u201cweird\u201d microbes that belong to a \u201cshadow biosphere\u201d.<\/p>\n

Felissa Wolfe-Simon, from the US<\/a> Geological Survey, is currently looking at the possibility that arsenic, found in contaminated places such as the Mono Lake in California, might support forms of life in the same way as other life forms use phosphorous\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
