\nCompassionate conservative?\u00a0 That is all so<\/em> last decade.\n<\/p>\n

\n"Pro-life" politicians supporting policies that actually "promote the life and wellbeing" of people walking the earth today?\n<\/p>\n

\nNever happens.\n<\/p>\n

\nBut still, when one of these guys shows his unspun true colors, it still shocks.\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd I am shocked, if not surprised that in a recent speech, South Carolina Lt. Governor Andre Bauer compared people whose children receive free and reduced-price school
\nlunches to "stray animals<\/a> that are fed handouts."\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to the Southern Political Report<\/em><\/a>, Bauer, a Republican candidate for governor, is "floating the idea that too many people get locked into unproductive
\nlives because they receive various wealth entitlements without making
\nany sacrifices or doing anything to better themselves."<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe State.com reports<\/em><\/a> that last Friday, Bauer said giving food to needy people means encouraging
\ndependence. It also gives the recipients a license to have children who
\nwill also be dependent on public aid, he said.\n<\/p>\n

\n

\n\t"My grandmother
\n\twas not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to
\n\tquit feeding stray animals," Bauer told a Greenville-area crowd. "You
\n\tknow why? Because they breed."\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nWow.\u00a0And here I thought South Carolina was all about breeding because right-wing conservatives in the state have gone out of their way the past few years to deny women access to birth control, to fund abstinence-only programs that do not work, and to pass fetal personhood initiatives, <\/a>24-hour waiting periods<\/span><\/span><\/a> and other roadblocks for women seeking to end unintended pregnancies.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAndre: I am confused.\n<\/p>\n

\nThen again, clarity may not be his strong suit.\n<\/p>\n

\n

\n\t \u201c\u2026We’ve got more people voting for a living than we do working for a
\n\tliving,\u201d said Bauer.<\/span><\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nHuh?\n<\/p>\n

\nBut, notes SPR<\/em>, "it remains
\nto be seen how South Carolinians will respond to his harsh analogy.\u00a0 Fifty-eight percent of students in the state\u2019s
\npublic schools\u00a0participate in the free and reduced-price lunch program.<\/span><\/span>"\n<\/p>\n

\nNearly 20 percent of South Carolinians are without health insurance,
\namong the highest percentages of uninsured in the country.\u00a0 You’ve got one governor
\nwho "takes a hike" to Argentina and a Lt. Governor who apparently
\nprofoundly disrepects more than half of the state’s population.\u00a0 Is it
\npossible that Bauer’s focus on school lunch assistance programs as wildly outlandish "entitlements" masks his inability to think of actual solutions to the state’s mounting problems?\n<\/p>\n

\nI guess keeping children and their families too hungry to make it to the polls could be seen as a potential political strategy for Mr. Bauer.\u00a0\u00a0 Because somewhere, somehow it must be "pro-life" to allow hungry children to experience stunted growth and mental development because they are unable to afford breakfast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
