\nAt this point, I almost expect that any politician who presents him (or her) self as "holier-than-thou" is going to have some unholy skeletons in their closet.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\nWitness the recent sex-tapes and love-child revelations<\/a> from former North Carolina Senator John Edwards, the intercontinental escapades<\/a> of current South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, the affairs, so to speak, of fundamentalist member of the "Family," Senator John Ensign now under investigation <\/a>for payments made to his former mistress (who is the former wife of Ensign’s former staffer), and the hypocrisy of Senator David Vitter (R-LA), who loves to moralize about other people’s lives but was himself paying sex workers<\/a> for….well you know what.\u00a0 Then we have former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer,<\/a> the caped crusader against prostitution who was nonetheless paying women for sex and ferrying them across state lines to do so…a double no-no.\u00a0 The list goes on.\n<\/p>\n \nBut since the pattern of hypocrisy has primarily involved sex and sexuality, it didn’t dawn on me to think of people being hypocritical about school lunch programs.\n<\/p>\n \nBut, as my father used to say, you learn something new every day.\n<\/p>\n \nIt turns out that South Carolina Lt. Governor Andre Bauer, who as we reported yesterday<\/a> compared children and families reliant on reduced price or free school meal programs to "stray animals," was himself a beneficiary of school lunch programs. Holy hypocrisy, Batman!\n<\/p>\n \nStill, Bauer claims he had a very rational reason for his complaint.\n<\/p>\n \nSeanna Adcox of the Associated Press <\/em><\/a>writes:\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \n\tA child of divorce who benefited from free lunches himself, Bauer \nYep.\u00a0 Imagine the lecture: "Sorry, Emily, we can not give you the breakfast you need to be able to think your way through second grade class today because we are trying to reduce the cycle of dependency.\u00a0 But if you survive your childhood hunger to become a Wall Street executive, the handouts are endless."\n<\/p>\n \nPolitico<\/em> reports<\/a> that in regard to school lunch programs, Bauer further stated:\n<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cYou\u2019re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply,\u201d he said.\n\t<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThey will reproduce, especially ones that don\u2019t think too much further than that.\u201d\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \nApparently he doesn’t have very high regard for his fellow South Carolinian human beings<\/em>.\u00a0\n
\n\tinsisted he wasn’t bad-mouthing people laid off from work in the
\n\trecession or advocating taking food from children, but rather
\n\temphasizing the need to break the cycle of dependency.\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
\nOr perhaps, having grown up during the "ketchup-as-vegetable" Reagan
\nAdministration, received far too few nutrients from his own school
\nlunch program to develop the parts of the brain that govern rational
\nthinking and empathy.\n<\/p>\n
