{"id":231724,"date":"2010-01-26T11:30:24","date_gmt":"2010-01-26T16:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chicagopressrelease.com\/?p=13684"},"modified":"2010-01-26T11:30:24","modified_gmt":"2010-01-26T16:30:24","slug":"the-joyce-foundation-honors-artistic-works-in-chicago-milwaukee-and-minneapolis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/231724","title":{"rendered":"The Joyce Foundation honors artistic works in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>2010 Joyce Awards Program Supports Five Midwest Cultural Institutions to Commission New Works by Artists of Color<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13709\" title=\"Joyce-Awards\" src=\"http:\/\/chicagopressrelease.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Joyce-Awards-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" \/>The Joyce Foundation is proud to announce the 2010 <strong><em>Joyce Awards<\/em><\/strong> winners in the Midwest cities of <span>Chicago<\/span>, <span>Milwaukee<\/span>, and <span>Minneapolis<\/span>\/<span>Saint Paul<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2003, the <strong><em>Joyce Awards<\/em><\/strong> program has been the only granting opportunity exclusively supporting artists of color in major Midwestern cities.<\/p>\n<p>Joyce is awarding five outstanding arts organizations grants of <span>$50,000<\/span> each to support new works in dance, music, theater, and visual arts. <span id=\"more-13684\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winners in each artistic category include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong>DANCE: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ordway.org\/\"  rel='nofollow'><strong>Ordway Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong><\/a> (<span>Saint Paul<\/span>) to commission African American choreographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tudance.org\/\"  rel='nofollow'>Uri Sands<\/a> to create a new dance work inspired by the paintings of African American artist <span>Ernie Barnes<\/span>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>MUSIC: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldtownschool.org\/\"  rel='nofollow'><strong>Old Town School of Folk Music<\/strong><\/a> (<span>Chicago<\/span>) to commission the African American stringband the <a href=\"http:\/\/carolinachocolatedrops.com\/\"  rel='nofollow'>Carolina Chocolate Drops <\/a> to create &#8220;Kingdom Coming,&#8221; a new multimedia collaborative performance piece that celebrates black heritage from Vaudeville;<\/li>\n<li><strong>THEATER: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.steppenwolf.org\/\"  rel='nofollow'><strong>Steppenwolf Theatre Co.<\/strong><\/a> (<span>Chicago<\/span>) to support a new play based on the biblical book of Job by African American playwright <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steppenwolf.org\/boxoffice\/productions\/bio.aspx?id=476&amp;crewId=1944\"  rel='nofollow'>Tarell Alvin McCraney<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>VISUAL ARTS: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mam.org\/\"  rel='nofollow'><strong>The Milwaukee Art Museum<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(<span>Milwaukee<\/span>), in partnership with the Chipstone Foundation, to support news works by African American visual artist <a href=\"http:\/\/theastergates.com\/home.html\"  rel='nofollow'>Theaster Gates<\/a> for a multimedia exhibition\/installation that includes pottery, sculpture, video and music.<\/li>\n<li><strong>VISUAL ARTS: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsmia.org\/\"  rel='nofollow'><strong>Minneapolis Institute of Arts<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(<span>Minneapolis<\/span>) to commission Iranian American artist <a href=\"http:\/\/alimomeni.net\/\"  rel='nofollow'>Ali Momeni<\/a> to create two new media installations to launch the museum&#8217;s inaugural year of contemporary art programming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The Joyce Foundation is proud this year to grant five <strong><em>Joyce Awards<\/em><\/strong> to very talented artists and the vibrant cultural institutions that will present these works,&#8221; stated <span>Ellen S. Alberding<\/span>, president of the Joyce Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their artistry illustrates the diversity and creativity that lies within our area and is part of what makes the Great Lakes region so special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 2003, the <strong><em>Joyce Awards<\/em><\/strong> has supported cultural institutions in <span>Chicago<\/span>, <span>Cleveland<\/span>, <span>Detroit<\/span>, <span>Indianapolis<\/span>, <span>Milwaukee<\/span>, and <span>Minneapolis\/St. Paul<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Award winners have not only presented their works to the institutions&#8217; traditional audiences; they have also worked with community groups, school children, and public art projects.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is for these commissions to produce vivid, new works of art that strengthen cultural venues and draw people of diverse backgrounds to experience the rewards of participating in the arts as well as elevate the visibility of creative works by minority artists.<\/p>\n<p>Applications are reviewed by independent arts advisors from outside the Midwest and reviewed and approved by the Foundation&#8217;s board of directors. <strong><em>Joyce Awards<\/em><\/strong> of <span>$50,000<\/span> are made directly to arts organizations and are awarded in dance, music, theater, and visual arts.<\/p>\n<p>Each award supports the work of the individual artist as well as significant community engagement efforts.
