The curious armadillo witnesses some of the cities, historic sites, wildlife, and geographic features of Texas on his travels. \u00a0His eagle friend teaches him the meaning of terms such as city, state, country, continent, earth, and planet. There are also a multitude of beautiful oil pastel\/watercolor scenes of maps, the environment, and Earth!<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>Curriculum Connections<\/strong><br \/>\nThis story is a great introduction to maps with its pictures of many perspectives and variations (physical\/climate\/political). The students will be able to recognize basic map symbols and reference land, water, cities, and roads. The student will also describe how location, climate, and physical surroundings affect the way people live, including their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation. (SOL 1.4, 1.5, 1.6)<\/p>\n<p><em>Fun Activity<\/em>:\u00a0 Have the students construct a simple map of a familiar area such as the school yard, using basic map symbols and a map legend!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eduplace.com\/ss\/socsci\/books\/content\/statemaps\/pdfs\/tx_map.pdf\">Texas State Outline Map<\/a> children can trace the route of Sasparillo the armadillo!<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eduplace.com\/ss\/socsci\/books\/content\/maps\/C__states_city.pdf\">Outline Map for States and Major Cities!<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eduplace.com\/ss\/socsci\/books\/content\/maps\/C__us_land.pdf\">US Landforms\/Terrain Map! <\/a>can be used as a coloring page or a great introduction to making physical maps (drawing mountains and tracing rivers!).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/homeschooling.about.com\/library\/pstateform.htm\">State Information Organizers<\/a> can be used to gather information about Texas from the book!<\/li>\n<li>The children can use the internet to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factmonster.com\/world\/geography\/types-maps.html\">learn about all types of maps! <\/a>(3rd grade comprehension)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>** The back of the book contains an excerpt all about armadillos!
