Based on our<br \/>\ncommunication with partner relief organizations, the following allocations will<br \/>\nbe made to support emergency relief efforts including rescue work, emergency<br \/>\nmedical care, temporary shelter and food and water distribution. In the coming<br \/>\nweeks, additional Union allocations will fund longer-term recovery efforts.<span style=\"\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>        &nbsp; <br \/>\n<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.directrelief.org\/\">DIRECT RELIEF INTERNATIONAL<\/a>,<\/b><br \/>\n     $25,000 <br \/>\n     Direct Relief International provides medical assistance to improve the<br \/>\n     quality of life for people affected by poverty, disaster and civil unrest.<br \/>\n     Funds will underwrite a key DRI staff position, Haiti Emergency Response<br \/>\n     Coordinator. This on-the-ground coordinator is responsible for emergency<br \/>\n     efforts including the distribution of medical material goods, site<br \/>\n     assessment for medical distribution supplies and the coordination with<br \/>\n     their two partner agencies: Partners in Health and <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Damian<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Pediatric<\/st1:placename><br \/>\n      <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">Hospital<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p> <o:p><\/o:p><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfoundation.org\/\">UNITED NATIONS FOUNDATION<\/a>,<\/b><br \/>\n     $25,000 <br \/>\n     The UN Foundation, the Union&#8217;s partner in our Nothing But Nets campaign,<br \/>\n     is working with the United Nation&#8217;s Central Emergency Response Fund<br \/>\n     (CERF), which plays a central role in the coordination of immediate relief<br \/>\n     and response work in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Haiti<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<br \/>\n     Union funds will assist in CERF&#8217;s general emergency response efforts,<br \/>\n     which include the distribution of medical services and supplies, clean<br \/>\n     water and sanitation access, emergency shelters, food delivery and<br \/>\n     infrastructure rehabilitation. In addition, after the immediate relief and<br \/>\n     response, CERF will continue its efforts to include medium-term recovery<br \/>\n     and long-term reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p> <o:p><\/o:p><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajws.org\/\">AMERICAN JEWISH WORLD SERVICE<\/a> (AJWS)<\/b>,<br \/>\n     $30,000<br \/>\n     AJWS provides general emergency relief grants that meet the immediate<br \/>\n     needs of communities affected by the disaster. Partnering with<br \/>\n     community-based agencies within <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Haiti<\/st1:country-region>,<br \/>\n     a particular focus is being placed on communities directly affected by the<br \/>\n     earthquake that lay outside areas already targeted for large-scale relief<br \/>\n     such as <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Port-au-Prince<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<br \/>\n     One such organization is MOSCTHA, the Socio-Cultural Movement of Haitian<br \/>\n     Workers. Funds are needed to fully fund MOSCTHA&#8217;s mobile clinic, which<br \/>\n     provides weekly medicine and personal hygiene supplies to more than 5,000<br \/>\n     families that are receiving little-to-no emergency support in rural areas.<br \/>\n     This NGO was a recipient of prior relief funds from the Union during the<br \/>\n     hurricanes that struck <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Haiti<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><br \/>\n     several years ago.<\/p>\n<p> <o:p><\/o:p><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theirc.org\/\">INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE<\/a> (IRC)<\/b>,<br \/>\n     $25,000 <br \/>\n     IRC is a global network of first responders who work together to provide<br \/>\n     access to safety, sanctuary and sustainable change for individuals<br \/>\n     shattered by natural disasters, violence and oppression. IRC draws on 75<br \/>\n     years of experience responding to emergencies and is collaborating with<br \/>\n     local Haitian partners to provide general emergency response assistance to<br \/>\n     those in need. Funds will be used to rehabilitate damaged clinics,<br \/>\n     establish mobile clinics, distribute food, water and water storage<br \/>\n     containers and dispense basic shelter materials including sheets,<br \/>\n     blankets, hygiene items and roofing sheets. This grant is funded by the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Union<\/st1:place> and facilitated jointly with the Jewish<br \/>\n     Coalition for Disaster Relief.<\/p>\n<p><o:p><\/o:p><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\">UNICEF<\/a><\/b>, $25,000 <br \/>\n     UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide.<br \/>\n     In coordination with other UN agencies, the International Red Cross and<br \/>\n     Red Crescent, UNICEF is responding to the emergency needs of women and<br \/>\n     children in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Haiti<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<br \/>\n     General funding will provide basic medical and health supplies, kitchen<br \/>\n     kits, water purification tablets, sanitation supplies, tarpaulins and<br \/>\n     tents for temporary shelter.<\/p>\n<p> <o:p><\/o:p><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishcanada.org\/index.aspx?page=1\">UNITED ISRAEL APPEAL<br \/>\n     CANADA\/ISRA-AID<\/a><\/b>, $10,000 CAD <br \/>\n     To date, over $10,000 CAD has been raised by the Canadian Council of<br \/>\n     Reform Judaism (CCRJ). The first allocation of funds from the CCRJ will go<br \/>\n     to United Israel Appeal <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Canada<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><br \/>\n     for its support of IsraAid, the coalition of Israeli NGO disaster relief<br \/>\n     specialists. Fund proceeds qualify for Canadian government matching<br \/>\n     dollars. IsraAid personnel currently are providing medical assistance to<br \/>\n     the injured as part of a major Israeli relief effort.. In light of the<br \/>\n     generous outpouring of support for its efforts, IsraAid will be expanding<br \/>\n     the scale of its operation, preparing an additional team that will be sent<br \/>\n     shortly. Within minutes of landing at the airport, the volunteer medical<br \/>\n     professionals from IsraAid traveled to the main Port-au- <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Prince<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">Hospital<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>,<br \/>\n     where they joined local doctors at the collapsed facility, to treat<br \/>\n     thousands of wounded and desperate earthquake victims. <o:p><\/o:p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"\">To donate to the URJ&#8217;s <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Haiti<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><br \/>\ndisaster relief efforts and to learn more about allocations, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urj.org\/relief\">urj.org\/relief<\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rabbi Marla Feldman is the Director of Development for the Union for Reform Judaism.
