{"id":236090,"date":"2010-01-27T08:41:07","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T13:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/health\/2010\/01\/27\/radiation-and-the-risks-of-high-tech-medicine\/"},"modified":"2010-01-27T08:41:07","modified_gmt":"2010-01-27T13:41:07","slug":"radiation-and-the-risks-of-high-tech-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/236090","title":{"rendered":"Radiation and the Risks of High-Tech Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/media\/radiation_CV_20090826171126.jpg\" alt=\"Radiation\" align=\"right\"\/>High-tech medical equipment can improve outcomes for patients &#8212; but it can also create new complications and safety risks.<\/p>\n<p>This morning&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/01\/27\/us\/27radiation.html\" >New York Times<\/a> makes that point by examining <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiologyinfo.org\/en\/info.cfm?PG=imrt\" >Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy<\/a> &#8212; a high-tech system for treating cancer patients with radiation. <\/p>\n<p>IMRT can allow for more highly targeted radiation treatments, sparing healthy tissue. But the systems are complicated, and there have been cases where patients received harmful overdoses of radiation. What&#8217;s more, regulation of the devices and certification of the technicians who operate them are spotty, varying greatly from state to state.<\/p>\n<p>Radiation risks aren&#8217;t limited to IMRT. As we noted last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/health\/2009\/12\/08\/more-patients-got-radiation-overdoses-in-ct-scans\/\" >hundreds of patients<\/a> suffered radiation doses because of a problem with the settings CT scanners.
