{"id":236971,"date":"2010-01-27T12:30:48","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T17:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/?p=35864"},"modified":"2010-01-27T12:30:48","modified_gmt":"2010-01-27T17:30:48","slug":"holloway-goes-to-washington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/236971","title":{"rendered":"Holloway goes to Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When President Obama delivers his first State of the Union address tonight (Jan. 27), Harvard freshman Janell Holloway \u201913 will be watching from the first lady\u2019s box in the U.S. House chamber.<\/p>\n<p>The White House bestowed the honor on Holloway in an effort to reach out to young people and as a reward for her White House service last summer as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about\/internships\/dcscholars\">D.C. Scholar<\/a>, following her graduation from high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president and first lady have been opening up the White House in new ways, and they\u2019ve made a special effort to make this a place for young people to learn about the world around them,\u201d said White House spokeswoman Moira Mack.<\/p>\n<p>Holloway, one of two students chosen for the honor, said she was thrilled to learn she\u2019d be at the event, during which the president lays out his policy agenda for the year, up close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like something out of a movie,\u201d Holloway told the Boston Globe. She said she had met first lady Michelle Obama during her internship. \u201cShe\u2019s really cool in person, really down to earth,\u201d Holloway said.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard<\/a>, Holloway is a member of the campus chapter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/\">Red Cross<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hcs.harvard.edu\/~citystep\/home.htm\">CityStep<\/a> dance troupe, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvardbsa.com\/web\/\">Black Students Association<\/a>.
