{"id":237164,"date":"2010-01-27T14:01:16","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T19:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com\/?p=9724"},"modified":"2010-01-27T14:01:16","modified_gmt":"2010-01-27T19:01:16","slug":"ice-others-announce-major-gang-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/237164","title":{"rendered":"ICE, Others Announce Major Gang Crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9726\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 269px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9726\" title=\"ICEbriefing\" src=\"http:\/\/liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com\/files\/2010\/01\/ICEbriefing1-259x194.jpg\" alt=\"ICE poster\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">ICE poster<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have launched what they call \u201cthe largest operation of its kind in our agency\u2019s history,\u201d rounding up more than 470 gang members, gang associates and others across the country in one week.<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown, dubbed Project Big Freeze, had a \u201cparticular focus\u201d on \u201ctransnational gangs\u201d and their associates inside the United States illegally, ICE chief John Morton told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to Morton talk more about that at Tuesday\u2019s press conference:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kyte.tv\/js\/kyte.js\"><\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\">window.kyteplayer=new Kyte.Player(\"channels\/368779\/763671\",{width: 600, height: 290, p: \"1561\", tbid: \"k_98\"})<\/script><noscript>Watch the latest Kyte video at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kyte.tv\/ch\/763671\">kyte.tv<\/a><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Transnational gangs are often involved in drug, weapons and even human smuggling, and like any gang they \u201chave a propensity toward violence,\u201d ICE said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of those arrested in Project Big Freeze are members or associates of major gangs based in Mexico, South America or Asia.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, of the 476 arrested more than 360 are foreign nationals who now face deportation, but some of them may be prosecuted inside the United States first, according to ICE.<\/p>\n<p>Project Big Freeze was \u201cmonths\u201d in the making, with a \u201csurge\u201d of arrests last week in 83 cities across the country, according to Morton.<\/p>\n<p>At Tuesday\u2019s press conference, Morton was joined by Dallas Police Assistant Chief Charles Cato and Barry Fritz, chief of police in Richmond, Minn., just outside Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis operation worked, and worked well, because it involved the direct participation of local law enforcement,\u201d Morton said, adding that federal agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also played an integral role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Richfield is not a hotbed of transnational gangs, we certainly have them in the [Minneapolis] metro area,\u201d which creates gang activity in his community, Fritz said.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, half of the criminal activity his officers encounter is related to transnational gangs, including a recent drive-by shooting in Richfield, according to Fritz.<\/p>\n<p>Noting the financial stresses being felt by police departments across the country, Fritz said that if it weren\u2019t for ICE \u201ca local department like us simply wouldn\u2019t have\u201d the ability to adequately combat transnational gang activity.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, he said, ICE is a \u201cforce multiplier\u201d with the legal ability to operate in nearby jurisdictions, where his department does not have authority.<\/p>\n<p>As for Cato, he described Dallas as a \u201ctransnational hub for narcotics\u201d coming into the United States from South America, and he said operations like Project Big Freeze have been \u201can integral part\u201d of reducing related violence.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, his city had 248 homicides, 85 percent of which had a \u201cnexus\u201d to gangs, drugs or guns, according to Cato.
